He was. Notice the giant title: "Kevin Burke’s C7 Grand Sport: A Shockingly Simple Recipe For Success". The car was on OEM leaf springs, Magride, DSC out-of-the-box controller, Heads/cam, wheels/tires, rear wing.

I mean I, along with the author of the article you linked, consider that mildly modded for track use. And iirc he ran the oem duckbill spoiler and Supercar 3R tires at that event. Grandsports are just that capable with a good driver.

One of three 1:33.0x laps from Road Atlanta this past weekend. Conti Sport 02s were surprisingly good even as the track continued to dry. Car can definitely go faster, but we were one of the fastest cars in the drying-dry conditions
