Scan tool recommendations

I’m thinking of buying my own scan tool. I know the Camaro is still under warranty but I also have my old Honda so I’d like to get something that’s useful. Not the $50 cheapo that just gives you basic codes but I don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on dealer level scanners either.

What do you all use or recommend?

If you don't want a code reader what are you looking for then? There are a couple options IMO.

I would recommend AUTOPHIX ODBII scanner for $40 for quick scans or troubleshooting on the fly. If you want more detail and control then I would tell you to get an HP Tuner MPVI2 for $300, anything more than that and you might as well call up your local SnapOn dealer and get a mechanic scanner kit.

I know there are many out there in various prices that will give you various levels of information. I'm looking to be able to check codes, read fuel mixture levels, activate components for diagnostics, that sort of thing. I just don't need to be able to reprogram new instrument cluster odometers or that sort of thing.

Yup. 2nd vote for an MPVI. Or a SCT X4.

The benefit of the SCT is it has a display and you can get a lot of info on the device itself.

An MPVI requires a laptop connected to HPTuners VCM Scanner software.

AutoEnginuity Scan Tool. Its awesome, check it out. I think its around $250. I have the Ford and GM modules for my cars. Its indispensable.

I use a Scan Gauge II. About $159, reads codes and gives useful information like intake air temp which comes in handy when building your own intake. Here's a link.
