OEM Track Brake Ducts

Picked up my 1LE this weekend and they didn’t have the track specific brake ducts. I talked to the tech who prepped the car and he said they weren’t in the trunk when it was delivered. Anybody know what the part number is or something specific I can tell the dealer so they can order them? I was searching the web but I want to make sure I get the right ones for the 1LE. Seems like there is a regular duct that goes on the SS that is different from the track version?

1LE has built in brake ducts. Not the same as the SS.

Guys, the brake ducts are not in the SS track prep kit that comes in the trunk. SS coupe is delivered with brake cooling ducts already in place. What the track kit includes are: larger deflectors for the suspension arms, and smaller dust shields for the rotors. My understanding is that the 1LE already has smaller dust shields, meaning just getting the larger deflectors would complete your 'track kit' on a 1LE as it were.

Ah ok, I figured I probably described it incorrectly, I just knew there was supposed to be something in the trunk. Do you know the part number, or some literature that I can forward to the dealer so they know what I’m talking about? The people I’m working with are kind of clueless, so I’d like to send them exactly what I need or I’ll probably never get it.

Nothing is supposed to come in the trunk of the SS 1LE, it already comes with everything you need installed. If you do want to get the other larger deflector then you can purchase it.

Ok I see. Thought I had read something about swapping/removing parts for track use that normally deflect rain water. Well, it's cheap, might as well get it.

No need. The 1LE is different underneath, it has a pan and ducting and things an SS does not.
The ducts you are talking about are for the non-1LE SS. They will just be a useless purchase for you.

Yep, I've taken my 1LE to the track a total of 7 days now, no issues at all with brakes. I believe some people have gone out of their way to install the "large" deflector. You can probably search here in the forums. I honestly doubt it makes much of a difference.

If you have the time and tools go ahead and take the front wheel off and take a look at the air duct/deflector that come with the car. You can see the car already comes with a small heat shield to allow the rotors to cool off, car also already has a deflector to get air to the rotors.

I was wondering the same thing, but I didn't realize it applies to the non-1LE SS models. I was digging through the trunk on the 1LE I just picked up looking for these as well haha. Was a bit confused when reading the track prep guide in the ZL1 forum and the attached image.

Thanks for clearing that up Christian!

Actually the track kit's metal shields are significantly smaller than the stock SS 1LE shields:
https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showt...1#post11136431

The stock SS 1LE metal shields are somewhat smaller than the stock SS shields though. I had no issues with the stock ones for about 3 years of track days with stock pads and tires. If running stickier tires and/or higher torque brake pads on track I would recommend installing the smaller metal shields from the kit ASAP. I waited to install them until it was time to replace the front rotors. I bought the kit and installed the plastic air deflectors right after I got the car and leave them installed on the car all of the time. I figure they can't hurt especially since I sometimes track the car on sunny days with temperatures in the upper 90s! There's another thread on here where several others also said they leave the plastic track deflectors permanently installed.

I believe there is a warning in the manual that you might have less than the usual amount of stopping force in the rain with the track metal shields installed but I haven't driven the car in heavy rain since I installed mine so I don't have any personal input on that. I felt no difference in braking on the highway or on the street in light rain even with some small puddles on the street.

EDIT: I attached the warning from the 2021 owner's manual.

Yeah I don't see how that warning makes much sense when the 1le comes stock with the smaller shields.

It's because the factory 1LE shields, while much smaller than the standard SS shields, are still significantly larger than their track counterparts.

The Cadillac CT5 V Blackwing shares the same front suspension design with the Camaro's and sport highly revised brake deflectors. They match the size of the SS track deflectors while being far better engineered for the massive brakes present on the Blackwing. RUQWIKR made a post comparing the stock, SS, and CT5 deflectors from which I borrowed the image below to illustrate the differences. The part numbers (85536980 / 81) are also courtesy of him. If you plan to purchase larger deflectors these are worth considering.
