Insurance and superchargers

What's everyone doing as far as your insurance goes when you get your supercharger installed? I would hate for a hailstorm to total the car and them not pay for the full replacement.

That might be a better question for your insurance company as there is so much variation in how specific policies cover the car.

I got a rider added to my policy for all my mods. Even with my expensive wheels added on top of everything else, I'm only paying an extra $150 a year. The 1st tier people you talk to on the phone don't know about this stuff. You have to ask them for it and then they go to their manager who explains what to do. You save big time doing this vs. someone who buys a Z06 or ZL1 since there's no risk impact to your premium from your mods.

Nothing, I'll suck it up if something happens. I just want my money back for what the car is worth. I just don't want them looking at my mods, period

Very nice...that's around where I was at before I got the wheels added. I have one of the more common insurance carriers. The way they worked was that they didn't care if I paid less than retail for the parts. They just asked for retail price quotes and said that's what they would cover, which was fine by me since they wouldn't include any labor costs. At least it's something.

Trust me, the way it works they don't factor it into risk at all. You don't have to plug one of those things into your OBD2 port or anything. You're just buying a dollar amount of added coverage. It's designed for people with collector type cars so the generic insurance companies can compete with the specialized companies (like a Haggerty) at a lower cost. They keep the quote as an attachment for reference if needed during a claim only. I spoke to people that work at my insurance company and there's no flag anywhere in the system for a person that mods with performance improving parts. The specific risk level that's associated with the car is all based off of the VIN#. The rest is stuff they already have on you like your driving record, your age, location, etc.

Just think about it - for example only - If you have a lapse in judgement and wreck your car doing 150mph doing something stupid on the road, you'll be screwed anyway, but at least you'll get paid for your losses. Performance modded cars are also stolen all the time.

Thanks for posting this, I just reached out to my Allstate agent. I told him I would have $18K in upgrades after my supercharger gets installed. He said he is going to call and find out because $18K is a lot of aftermarket stuff, but he said the most important thing is to keep EVERY receipt for proof.

Oh good, I hope it works out for you. They might call it something else other than a rider. That was Geico's term for it. Liberty Mutual also offers it and they were half the price of Geico after a few years. I guess you have to switch now every so often because they all start low and then raise the price on you.

I highly suggest a rider. When I totaled my 2013 Camaro SS the insurance company (ASAA) only gave me an additional 5 grand for all my mods. I had over 18K in receipts for the stuff I installed.

Guess I dont understand fully. You had the additional coverage added and then when you totaled it they only have you less than 1/3 of what you had added? How does that pan out?
