What kind of records do you keep and how?

I have my ZLE and I've changed the rear diff fluid, Oil, Coolant, Done a track day, changed the oil again.

I don't want to bring it to the dealer but it has an 8 year 80K mile Platinum Gm warranty on it.

How do you keep records incase something happens that you are sure you have a maintenance history.

I keep a notebook, essentially a log book of the service I did, the date, the mileage, also what went in, what oil, what diff fluid, etc.
I also attach any related receipts, like the purchase of my oil from Speedway for example.

One of the spots on my log is "who performed", usually me, but I have had one service at the dealer.

Quick glance and you know what, who and what was used, including proof of those materials (receipts).

This is something I have been doing for 25+ years on all my cars, extensive, self kept records, in case....

I guess This is the way to do it.

Simple but effective.

Thanks.

For my last Camaro, I did most of the maintenance and wrote it down on the pages provided in the OM. Dealer repair receipts went into a 3-ring, along with the window sticker and bill of sale.

The new ZL1 will be maintained by the dealer, and all receipts will go into the same 3-ring as the old SS. If I ever sell the car privately, the buyer will get all the information. But, why would I sell this gorgeous car, the pinnacle of Camaro evolution?

I keep a maintenance log in a google doc spreadsheet. Different tabs for different vehicles. I capture date/mileage/work/parts and add a link to the cloud uploaded picture of the parts receipt. If i have taken photos during the work, I'll create an album and link that in the doc as well.

Those thermal paper receipts will vanish over time, so scan/photograph that stuff to save it.

Carfax lets you do your own entries. I've been doing it and marking them as DIY. It's better than nothing.
You can also upload documents, but since it's public....

I've never had to reach back for service records, not once, ever.

I've also never had anything powertrain catastrophic, either, on any of my cars.

The extent of my record keeping is I tear off the oil filter cardboard lid and I write the date and mileage on it, oil brand and viscosity, but that's it.

In "olden times" (pre smart phone), I would keep a small log book notebook in the car, mainly to record gas fill-ups and to calculate mileage (a habit I inherited from my grandfather when I inherited his 1973 Maverick that contained his mileage notebook). In the personal computer era, I would keep a maintenance log in text form, in addition to abbreviated notes in the mileage log book.

Nowadays, for my sixth gen, I have a simple Word document on my Android phone that I use to track mileage and to record maintenance and modifications (including minor cosmetic changes), in addition to maintaining all paperwork for any dealership work.
