Door Speaker Replacement - 6x9's or 6.5" Round?

Not talking about stock replacements here, but putting an entire new high end system in - amps and all speakers at the minimum. Looking for some feedback on which way people went on this. It looks like you can get some higher end stuff if you go to a round speaker. Anyone done this? Any fitment issues with big 6x9's or deep high end round speakers? Is there a good adapter for 6.5" round speakers?

Thank you.

-Geoff

The Crutchfield website shows Metra 82-3018 speaker mounting brackets that are used for mounting a 6.5" or a 6.75 inch round speaker in the Camaro ('16 and up) front door panels.

Use the 6.5 then you can do some nice components.

At least on paper, there are more high-end options for round speakers than for 6x9s. It depends on exactly how "high end" you really want to go, though. I just put Audiofrog GS690s in my doors and they are fantastic. At $330/pr, they are the "budget line" for that brand. Their GB series is all round speakers. In general, the 6x9 will get you more bass extension. This is useful if you're not adding a sub, which is the case for me. If you are going to add a sub (or two), then it probably isn't useful and you get more choices with round speakers. Here's a video where they put round speakers in the door with the Metra adapter, which appears to work fine. The Metra 6x9 adapter is a bit more of a pain, because it appears that the bolt hole spacing on aftermarket 6x9 speakers isn't quite standardized.

Thank you Matt. I was reading your thread and was glad to see some good factory replacement options. I think if I do a full swap, I am going to do some kind of sub (at least as much as can fit in a convertible). I think round is the way to go.

I really got hooked on the YouTube channel for Five Star Car Stereo.

Plenty of pre-made brackets for 6x9 to 6.5 round out there. See this vid:

I would be torn between the round, which seems to be what most quality component sets come with (ex. Morel), and the extra mid-bass punch that you might get with larger ovals.

Oh, and 2017 Camaro stereo upgrade:

Great link, thank you. I wish I had a car audio place like that by me. I go into some of the local ones and there usually just a bunch of millenials staring at their phones. I need to find a place like that in Detroit.

I just brought mine home today from the install. Put in dual Magnum subs and JBL amp in the back and Alpine components up front and coaxials in the back. I went with the 6 1/2" components up front, since I'll get all the bass I need from the new subs. Sounds soooo much better! The factory speakers in the 1SS are pure garbage!!! Haven't heard the Bose in the 2SS, so I can't offer a comparison, but this set up is amazing! FWIW, I shouldn't have wasted money on the rear speakers. Can't tell a difference from stock due to the angle they face and the size of the Recaro's in my 1LE.

Yelp Car Stereo Installers in Detriot, MI:

Detroit, MI

Same for San Jose, CA:

San Jose, CA

Go to the All Results section, not Sponsored Results.

You are so right SomeGeoffGuy, you are in Motor City, and/or Detroit Rock City, and you have stereo installers with like 5-9 reviews max. Mine was the 3rd in San Jose, Car Audio Express, 250 reviews. They were very good.

Yea, you think the "Motor/Rock City" would have some legendary installers wouldn't you! Nope! I ask around and I get few recommendations, but there is no "Go to" installer.
