Tires.....

I have a 2020 ZL1 with the factory Goodyear tires. Live in ND and the car is garaged from November - April. The Goodyear’s are great for grip, but nothing else (in my mind). I took a trip to Deadwood, SD and drove through a rain storm and it turned into a white-knuckle drive at speeds over 50mph. I don’t track the car, and won’t, but I do like to occasionally stomp on it - I try not to be a tire spinner. Looking for a tire with less road pull as well.

So, after that driving in the rain experience, I need different tires. But, looking for grip, quieter ride, and ability to drive through rain. Won’t be driving below 45-50 degrees.

Are there anything better than the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S? Anybody try the Sport 4? Am I wrong about disliking the Goodyear’s for street use?

I need better handling for road trips but still don’t want to spin when I put the pedal down.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The michelin P4S are about as best as a street tire your going to find.

The GY's are a death trap in the rain. I got caught in a few storms, pretty much riding right lane/shoulder @ 35mph isn't fun. I also got caught in the rain on the michelins and its a night and day difference.

Everyone talks about the PS4s but I went with the Pirelli P Zero. I'm on my 2nd set and have done a handful of of autocross events. They handle well in the rain and have no road noise.

Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires are good too and are cheaper than the Michelins and a good treadwear rating.

I found tread life on P Zeros to be very poor. Much worse than their UOTG rating. Contrast to Michelin which always seems to do much better than competitors with the same UOTG rating.

Even with a handful of autocross events. I had nearly 20k on the tires. The reason why I purchased a new set was that I roasted the inside of both rear tires at an hybrid autocross event on a not so friendly tire surface.

I bet there was another 15k or more I could have gotten out of the fronts.

I have the continental contact sports on order. About 1550 installed. My sc3 ‘s are shot at 6800 miles.

I haven't had any issues with my stock GY F1 SC3 tires in the rain. I keep hearing people say this but I don't understand why my experience has been different. I know the 1LE SC3Rs are poor in the rain. That being said you can't go wrong with Michelin PS4S or Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires.

Me either Z OH 6! Maybe if people would just slow down and not drive like Bats out of Hell it would work out. Every circumstance is different though for everyone.

Go drive them on the intestate in a hard rain while trying to maintain the speed limit or flow of traffic or even on a back road where water will pool up. You'll see why you shouldn't drive them in the rain.

You'll be that person going slower than the 90 year old person on a dry, sunny day.

Any tire will hydroplane in water greater than its tread depth. If you are hitting standing water at speed you should expect this.

Do the other tires suggested start with greater tread depth and better water expression tire patterns?

Extreme Contacts DWS 06 start with 10/32 tread All Season Tire Rated 560
Extreme Contact Sport 10/32 Rated at 340
Pilot Sport 4S 9.5/32 Rated 300
P Zero 9/32 Rated 280
Eagle F1 Supercar 3 - 7/32 Rated 220

Based on this I am not surprised at the fantastic dry grip of the stock tires but nor am I surprised they hydroplane like crazy and wear out fast.

If you hit standing water with any tire, you're going to notice it.

As most have already told you, the Goodyears and pretty much Race Tires in my opinion. I'm in California and it rarely even rains here but when it did, it scared the shit outta me.

Ditched the Goodyears for the Michelin. Far better tire for a street car. I'm pretty much just like you. I don't track my ZL1 but I try to make my commute to and from the office as fun as possible. I remember the tire guy saying, "but these tires still have meat on them".... I didn't care. Until they heat up, the Goodyears are crap. Its like driving on glass.

Just my .02 cents.
