Cooling Impact of Custom Brake Ducting

I’d like some feedback from ppl on what level of cooling impact that custom brake cooling air ducts (that direct air directly onto the rotor at all times) will have in terms of improvement over the stock brake cooling.

Do people think it would have a significant impact or only a minor impact?

I would prefer to do this over spending C$7500 Canadian dollar on the better cooling front brake kit from AP Racing / Essex

Since I’ve put supercar 3R tires on my car in Hawk DCT 70 pads, my pedal has gone to the floor twice while slowing down for corners and it has scared the crap out of me, granted both times it happened I did not take a full 40 minute break between tracking sessions. However I want to have complete confidence in my brakes at all times, within reason.

I boiled the fluid the first time I was at the track. I had just put the 6 piston fronts on my car. I changed the fluid to motul 660, added titanium shims, and the SS cooling deflectors. Haven't had an issue since, gained a lot of confidence in them.

What six piston brake kit did you put on your car?

Yes I should try titanium shims. That and some cooling fans between sessions.

I already have Motul 660

I put the 1LE 6 pistons on the front on my SS. Stock 1LE pads, supercar 3's. Obviously my braking technique needed help, but at my speeds I should not have boiled the fluid. It's not 3R's and hawk pads, but I assume by the time I get to that level my braking will be much improved.

I run the 6 piston Z06 setup on my 5th Gen SS an when I’m at the track I have 2 box fans that I put right up next to the tires to cool the brakes between sessions.

Yeah I think that’s too many differences to make a apples to apples comparison between our cars.

Oh I agree!!! My point was the size of the SS deflectors and the smaller backing plate should help in any setup ... More air will never be bad. And for the price, it's a no brainier.

First and only mod on my 2019 ZLE was to swap out the small oem brake deflector with the larger SS unit. Muuuch bigger. And cheap as shit. $37 for the pair. I was sold on this solution even before I bought a Camaro. I know the owner of Vorshlag and he once pointed me to some testing he performed on Mustang cooling options. Net - the brake cooling deflector beat a 4" hose system every time. By and average of 100f.

True! I did order those parts but forgot to put them on before I tracked last weekend, I wish I had remembered so I could have seen how much of a difference they make

Put the shims and SS deflectors as suggested. No reason whatsoever for you to run DTC70s tho, which will put out tons of heat regardless of what you do. Id go down to DTC60s if you want more bite vs stockers. Or Ferodo 1.11.

Then, id swap the Motul for SRF and if you cannot get it, try Willwood EXP as it is VERY good.

Lastly, dont kid yourself about AP solving heat issues from high torque pads. Been there done it. Stock Brembos are mighty enough. Just reduce heat and improve brake fluid (plus shims and deflectors).

Cheers!

Using titanium shims with OE pads probably is not a good choice. Using the titanium shims slows heat transfer into the caliper, which means it will stay in the pad. This could lead to pad fade.

But you are running the Hawks so running the titanium shims could be beneficial.

TrackClub I agree 100% Stock 1LE calipers, DS1.11 pads (f&r), Ti shims, SS deflectors, Motul 600. Zero fade issues, LRP, the Glen, Thompson and out brake some P$$ cars, and a lot of others etc. Manage the heat in your 1LE brakes properly and they work great.
