Park to drive back to park
So here a question…on my 2022 A10 LT1.
In some instances I’ve found myself moving my car from park to drive back to park very quickly. IE get a phone call as I shift into gear then I put in park to answer the call. When I do that, there’s an audible mechanical clunk , which doesn’t sound good. I haven’t noticed this on any other car, in particular the 8 speed SS camaro or 10 speed ZL1. So, what exactly is happening when I shift back and forth quickly like that? Clearly, it sounds like I’m suddenly stopping something from rotating.Does this damage anything / is this common? Car runs awesome… |

Dumb question, but... you've come to a complete stop before shifting to park? If you're still moving even a little, the sound is the parking pawl skipping and trying to find it's slot to lock the driveline.

Not a dumb question at all… I’m at a complete stop when it happens.

No problem whatsoever! ...except I just got my driveway repaved and the car is garage confined for a few more days, but I'm curious and will test it on an A8. Not the same trans (just about 90% the same, but I don't want to piss off A10 worshipers and turn this thread into another A8 bashfest, so I lowlit this part, haha), yet I wonder if the behavior is similar here.
Does it do the same with a park-reverse-park shift sequence, too?

With some testing, it doesn’t always do it park to drive back to park. I tried the car in one spot no issues. Moved forward a few feet and tried again…and there was the into park bang. It happened 2 times in a row, then didn’t occur again in that position. It seems that by moving the shifter too quickly between to drive and back park, that maybe drive mode is the still in process of being engaged and therefore not able to fully disengage before it hits park again. The car noticeably moves (more than normal) when this happens. I just never had this occur in any other auto I’ve owned. It makes me cringe when it does. I’ve been making a conscious effort to shift back and forth more slowly, but I still slip up as I can’t be fully “aware” of it at all times. And truthfully I may shift quickly back and forth because I’m either distracted or maybe realized I forgot something in the house etc. |

Thanks for the extra info Chutzpah, your conjecture makes sense, I'll test it on mine and post back. One more question, did you try this on a level surface, or were you on an incline when this happened (and if yes, was the car facing up or down the slope)?
