Fire Extinguisher Mount

I'll be driving with a club in August that requires a fire extinguisher mounted in the car. Stock seats and no roll bar/cage.

Brey Krause makes a nice looking piece but kind of pricey. Anyone else have a cost effective alternative?

Last thing you want is to be clunked in face with loose object in fast crashing car.

If you can weld, make your own.

Mine has never been questioned at tech inspection.

Though I will mention that the little plastic retaining strap is clearly a weak point (and that bracketeer seems to be using the same little strap for theirs). There ought to be a source for an all-metal toggle style strap.

Sorry about the rust. S197 Mustangs have a well-earned reputation for passenger-side water leaks.

I am deeply amused by clubs that have this requirement. The little bottle is a joke that will accomplish nothing in a real fire.

They are still sufficient for dealing with small fires before they become big fires. Not in a track setting, but I've been there (not my car, either).

I agree, it's ridiculous. My PCA region does't require them, but our neighbors do.

There are some events at MSR Houston that don't use corner workers at all, just a start/finish line flagger. I wonder if a small extinguisher might come in handy in that case since there are no corner workers available to use their fire extinguishers on your car if needed. Maybe it would be better than waiting for the safety truck to make it out there with an extinguisher. Or maybe to help someone else while they are waiting for the safety truck. Of course if they are off track your car could start a brush fire if you try to go help depending on how dry it has been recently.

The strap does not come with the bracketeer, it must be part of the extinguisher that he bought. I have the bracketeer, and I bought an extinguisher with a metal strap. Unit is ok, but I must mention that bracketeer overcharged me.

I agree. My old track friend was able to deal with a small engine fire in his brand new TA1 Vette during his maiden race at Mosport. I posted his in car vid of this incident in an early thread on this subject. He used a small bottle mounted on a passenger side and didnt have to engage his main fire supression system, or wait for marshals (in which case the small fire would have grown to a big fire zero doubt). As far as any fires go, some protection is better than none.

Updated my DIY mount with a proper metal bracket and strap and de-rusted and painted the part that allows use of the seat mounting bolt to secure the whole business in place. The good news is that it's readily available at Lowe's.

Shown with the old plastic stuff for comparison.
