remembering and keeping the car in track mode

Hey guys,

I've completed my third performance driving track day at Sonoma Raceway, ran an average 2:05 lap time, so I feel like I'm learning to be faster. I've also learned between the gear and track fees this hobby is expensive! haha

I'm having one problem. When I go back and watch the PDR files sometimes I'm in Tour mode! Once even weather mode!! I understand this may hurt the car. The first day I chalked it up to inexperience. I wasn't shifting or watching the towers. Now it's getting on my nerves. I check constantly before I go out on the track. I feel comfortable enough to check the mode and mark the finish line so what gives? Why does the car go back to Tour mode every time I shut off the engine? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

This seems a std default. Likely for safety etc.
Regardless, each time you start the car up to go out on a track, you need to put it in Track Mode and then select whatever PTM mode you wish to run. Those are two separate steps BTW. Cheers!

it is a standard default to go back to "tour"...make a mental checklist or you will go on track in the wrong mode! I buckle up and put on my helmet first. Put car in track mode and appropriate PTM. Then, I start the PDR once the track session is HOT. I have forgotten everything before so I make sure to remind myself before every session.

It's the standard philosophy for any of these nannies . . . err, active driver assist technologies.

When there is an option to either dial their sensitivity/intervention back or turn them off, that must be accomplished by the driver's active intention every time he/she starts the car. Among other reasons. it's not always going to be the same person driving any given car from one trip to the next. Any given driver might not want the same setting two trips in a row, like from the last hot session of the day and the drive home/to the hotel.

If selecting different driving modes isn't second-nature to you, write a physical list and tape it someplace where you can't miss seeing it.

Good idea Norm: the list! Mental or otherwise.
Btw enabling rev match should be on it as well, for those that rely on it, as getting surprised by locked up rears is never a good feeling

Thanks guys. I kinda figured Tour was the default mode.

Norm, Thanks for the advice! I used to have a sticker on my bike that read: Turn on air shifter, Turn on NO2. Too many runs down the track blowing my horn instead of shifting haha..

It boggles my mind that they didn't bother to at least have icons or something on the dash to tell you what PTM mode you're in and if rev match is on or off. It's a digital display with lots of real estate, so it's not like it would have been hard to do. In general, there's a lot of wasted potential with the screens.

mine stays in sport if I park in sport. I actually wish it did default back to tour for exhaust noise at 4am. I have never tried to park it in track. ill give it a try. But starting off in sport would be better than tour.

Sport does indeed default to Sport but you must go to Track to enable PTM modes no matter what...

For early morning starts you can hold the start button for about 10 seconds without your foot on the brake to start the electronic systems up without the engine running and switch to stealth exhaust mode then start the engine.

I’m in SF and head to Sonoma a bunch of times a year. Let me know next time you head up. I’m going with hooked on driving August 22 probably.

Back on topic... I typically check off the things I need to setup right when I get in the car. Helmet, gloves, and car settings. Then go!

It's nice if you can establish a mental checklist that includes specific car settings as habit.

But that may prove to be more difficult for those of us whose driving has mostly NOT been in cars with "drive modes" and those who don't play around with the various options/settings much in their street driving.
