I just changed my rear diff fluid. 1 inch long sludge buildup on bolt.

What's weird is that I only got 0.6 quarts out. I tried putting more in but it won't take more than 0.6q - and I let it drip for a long time. Did I do something wrong?

The car wasn't level when I did it, but the fill plug was higher than drain, so if anything it should have taken more rather than less?

Was the fluid warm when you did the swap? The oil is so thick, you should warm it up with a spirited drive before you drain it.

PS: Just read my manual, and it states the V6 model with the auto trans has a diff fluid capacity of 0.53qts. Im certain the 4cyl and 6cyl use the same diffs in the auto version. Not sure why the 4 cyl is not included in the car manual.

Everything in these cars are partial to the ACDelco stuff. I run their oil filters as well.

Just changed mine to day. Stuck with the AC Delco 10-4034. 1.2 quarts came out and went in. If you have not changed it, do it. Have 11,600 and it looked like dung. metal sludge on the magnetic plugs and a silver tint to the fluid if held in the light. I think I will drive it for another 5k then change it again since I will only have to buy one quart. If it looks pretty bad again I might just be doing them every 10k. I do drive it pretty hard.

This is what mine looked like with 1000 miles. I would change it no later than 1500 miles with an oil change. I went to the dealer at 500 miles to get an oil change. Of course they said it didn't need it. Come back at 10,000 miles and they would change it. I went bought my oil and diff lube and changed both myself at 1000 miles. Can't understand dealerships not wanting to take our money even if it just gives us piece of mind to have fluids changed after break in. We spend 30,40,50 grand on a car and want it to last and perform as best as possible. If you can do it yourself. Then you know it will be right and cheaper.

A bit of a bump, but a question related to the change. Considering changing out the fluid as mine has developed the rear end grown on the first 1-2 turns when cold. Will putting the rear on my race ramps be acceptable or does the car really need to be jacked level in the air for the change out?
