Updates, in general, are just to keep up with the new model years. When I bought my Autel, it came with 2 yrs of free updates and now if I want to update it, it's about $125 (don't remember exactly). But since I'm only using it on my cars and a few co-workers, none of which are newer than the 2022MY that I am currently updated to I see no reason to spend the money. Scanner still works just fine. It's the same way it has always been with scanners. Back in the day when I was a tech, I had to buy update cartridges from Snap-On every year. Now THAT was expensive, on top of a $5000 scanner.

As I said above, a bit of smooth talk got me onto a 5-year free update plan for the D8 (it came with 2 or 3 years "stock"), and it is good till Dec 2025. After that I'll either upgrade or don my then-newly acquired chatgpt skills and ask them nicely one more time

I can check what exactly my D8 supports (after a ton of update cycles), if you have specific questions, just let me know and I'll post some screenshots.

Thanks, but I'm just on the fence between the D8 or D9. The D9 includes several capabilities the D8 lacks and I'm not sure if there's anything on the D9 I'd find useful given I have no interest in reprogramming my ECU.

Yes, see screenshots below.

Special functions that the D8 supports can be accessed several ways, from a "Special Features" collection on the main screen, via diagnostics or even the module topology graph or module list. Thus it's okay if someone forgets where they were, they're easy to find no matter which location feels "intuitive" to different people.

Thanks for all the Responses.

Settled on the Autel MK808Z-TS
Was $550 of Prime day.

Initial thoughts , processor is a tad slow, registering it required multiple attempts other than that it appears to have all the functions I was looking for so far.

Thanks, that’s very helpful. I wonder what all other “cool” features it can do with the camaro. Also for that D8, can it be used with any manufacturers w/o have to pay extra to unlock a specific manufacturer?

Sorry, I somehow missed this one

It supports ~150 manufacturers across the world with no surcharge for any of them, and updates come regularly, about 40-50 of these manufacturers' modules still get an update every 2-3 weeks, even though the D9 superseded this product in the meantime.
