A8 shudder reason to not buy a new or used SS?
Hopefully I'm going to be buying a 16-18 here in the next couple months and I was wondering if the shudder issue was reason enough to not even consider buying an a8? I've had both in the past and I was never really partial to either.
How high are the chances that the shudder will happen? Is it only a matter of time, or is it just luck? Is it 50% of all a8's, higher, lower? Is there any way to check and see if a used car bought from a dealership had the flush done, TC replaced, or entire tranny replaced? Thanks |

My Camaro had that, flushed the tranny and all good now. I also have a GMC 1500 with 6.2 and A8. It was worse then my Camaro and GM flushed it under warranty and its perfect now. I wouldn't let that be a factor on purchasing a used Camaro and if you buy from a dealer and you feel like it needs to be flushed make them do it before you buy it.

I currently have a 16 SS with the A8 with 14k miles. I actually have an M6 ZL1 on order and the only reason i'm upgrading after only 2 years is because i'm tired of dealing with the shudder, otherwise I would have waited a couple more years at least. Before it started the shutter i had no other issue with the A8, it worked very well.
I did do the flush, which helped however the shudder can slowly creep back. I can't answer the rest of your questions, I will just say that I personally would take the M6 over the A8 in the SS given the issues. |

Ive read hear that late 2017 and after is fine. I’m in the market also, but not going to risk it. Besides I grew up driving stick, and m6 sounds like a lot of fun.

Bought the M6 just to avoid the shudder chances.
wouldn't be afraid of the A10 in the 19's. Tim |

Buy a low mileage CPO 2017/2018 and enjoy the 100k total mile warranty on the transmission and rear end. If you insist on cheaper tuning cost and don't care about the year one bugs, then go the 2016 route, but remember you're take a year off that CPO warranty as well.

I traded my beautiful 2017 RS in due to being sick of the shudder after only 6K miles. The flush did not cure it and I had to deal with such a hassle and it took 4 weeks to get a new torque converter. A friend of mine is on his second Colorado due to the shudder issues and the second one has it too. I got sick of the hassles and the car being in the shop all of the time, I traded in the car. I mentioned it to the GM Service Advisor and her exact words were "Good for you, the A8 is such a crappy transmission".
I was going to buy another Camaro with M/T, test drove 3 different ones at 2 different dealers and I was not impressed- steering wheels were crooked when going straight and they did not seem to track good. Drove a used C7 Corvette that the dealer told me had differential issues (but it was fixed) and it was a red flag for me. I would not buy any GM with an A8 after this. I wanted another Camaro but after test driving a base Mustang GT M/T (which I know they have their own set of problems) 2 times like it was a used car, it shifted, handled, drove and tracked perfectly, so I bought it. 1000 miles later it's perfect and I love it. Only because it does everything it supposed to do....... I love the Camaros but my issues with the A8 completely drew me away from GM. You may be fine buying an A8- it could be the luck of the draw or may be isolated to a build time frame. Mine was a late 2016/early 2017 build.

Just read a post from the corvetteforum from a member who's having the shutter problem with his 2019. GM hasn't fixed the problem. I wouldn't take a chance on the A8 trans in a car or truck, unless you're willing to use a Range device to eliminate the AFM.

Gm said that it was 2016-2017 ( 2017 with up to a build date of march) after March that they used a different kind of fluid that it doesn't happen with.

Thanks for the responses. Seems like there's going to be more auto's out there during thanksgiving or Christmas.

Didn’t stop me. Just bought my A8 new (as a leftover). I drove it home in manual mode to avoid AFM, and bought a Range AFM disabler before the car hit 600 miles. I’m going to have the trans fluid changed to the upgraded full synthetic Mobil 1 LV by the time I hit 1000 miles. Oh, and a 10 year bumper-to-bumper extended warranty... At some point I’ll probably just do a beefcake Circle D converter and be done with it anyway.

One of the reasons I selected an 18' was to get in after the shakedown. I have just under 2k miles on mine - nothing to report as a problem. Hope it stays that way. Fun car.

Regrettably, there are many '18s experiencing it also. Our July 2018 delivered 2SS had it. Flush per the TSB eliminated it only to have it recur 2,000 miles later. The dealer replaced the torque converter and shared that they've done the same on several other '18s they've sold. |
