Trade value is better now than before pandemic, but unless it’s new you’re paying more used as well.

I paid out of pocket the approx. $150 for documents/fees. This was in May 2019 for my New 2018 2SS Vert with:

- Auto
- NPP
- MRC
- Wheel Locks
- Stripes
- Blacked out Bowties (F&R)
There were some good offers on 2019 cars when I was buying my 2020, but nothing sparked my interest because they weren't optioned anywhere near how I wanted. Even still, the base 2SS 'vert cars were being offered at about $5k below MSRP (not below invoice) and were including the GM incentives that accounted for about half of that.

I think that the market is just generally getting tighter and prices are simply not going to be discounted like that any more.

Trade values are meaningless. All that matters is "X" in the formula below:

My car + $X = New Car

When the dealer has to give top dollar for the trade, the offset with no discount off of the new price. When trade values are terrible, they have a lot more room to move on the selling price of the new car. Everyone gets all wrapped up in what the value is for their trade, but it makes zero difference in the grand scheme.

If you sell your car now while prices are high then you will have to wait for the market to adjust in order to really gain because whatever you buy now also costs more. I agree the way the market it is right now buying new almost makes more sense.

For example, I could buy a 2017 A10 ZL1 with 4k miles for 49k last May. Now that same car or something similar is 52-54k. Hell I remember a couple dealers local closing out remaining 2018 Zl1's new for 52k a couple years back.

Right. It's exactly the same when you own a house. The market value of your house is meaningless until/unless you sell it. And, unless you move into a cheap rental until market values fall significantly before you buy another house, you haven't made a dime.

Or unless you own more than one house.

It was some of both. I got dealer discounts and gm discounts. I was too lazy to dig out the paperwork. Maybe my laziness will not be so overwhelming tonight 😷

You can only live in one place at a time. So, owning a second house -costs- you money.

Well, if that is the case, then I am glad I bought when I did. I had a '91 RS that I bought in 1996 and sold in 2007. I always wanted to get another Camaro after they brought them back, just never was in the right position after buying other toys and tractors, etc. They also never seemed to be highly discounted back then either. So then came 2019 and I was starting to look again and seen the current model year 2019 looks, which I absolutely was not a fan of and seeing the direction that I thought the looks were headed and how much I really like the looks of the 2016-2018, I figured it was now or never in acquiring a Brand new 2018 or my options later would be to go used or to go with the ugly new model year. So I started looking and found this one, loaded and my color which was Black to match the rest of my fleet (what's the chances) and huge discount off, just had to drive 5 hours to get it that's all. The next closes one after that to me was down in Mass. but did not have the options this one did and was more money. So if what you are saying is true then I guess I got lucky with a great deal that will be a thing of the past now.

When I bought mine, I did a national search over the course of many weeks. The exact car I wanted simply didn't exist. So, I opted to forego NPP to get literally everything else I wanted and nothing else that I didn't.

Yes, the (vehicle) market has been in conditions that I've never seen before. I made a couple thousand off of my Infiniti trade (factoring money that was invested into it, not simply looking at the positive equity I had) and I happened to purchase my Camaro at a great price. I got it cheap enough that I could about trade/sell to Carvana, etc. today and break even.

not unless you are renting it out for more money than your mortgage/taxes/insurance on it.

While you're correct, my view is that you are referring to Rental Property and not someone's second home.
