Just Raced a 392 and Oil Questions

On the highway back from Omaha met a SRT 392 Charger and had a good race, but damn our SS is fast! The 392 owner was riding alone and I was with my girl and we did a 40 roll, he honked and completely fair start but I still jumped half a car ahead, that torque hitting hard! Then we totally stayed like that all the way to 120. Seems it was just like what all the youtube videos suggest, Camaro SS is a bit faster than 392, so with my girl in the car we were pretty much neck and neck except for that initial hit. But I was driving in competition mode so maybe he didn’t turn off his traction control and the power got limited, I say this cus I drove scat packs before and they are also torque monsters! I thought he could jump on me honestly.
And I plan to track the car so wondering what oil should I put in, 5w30, 5w40, or 0w40? I know I should use 40 oils for track, but it is also my daily driver so the oil will stay there after tracking, and nebraska is getting pretty cold like below 30 degree, I heard 40 oils doesn’t work well under colder temp? so should I use it? and if I do use it which one should it be? 5w40 or 0w40? what’s the difference? Thank you in advance!

Well, the Challenger weighs like 1000 tons so I am not surprised. Power-to-weight ratio-wise, Camaro SS is better.

The factory recommends 0W-40 oil that meets DEXOS 2(not DEXOS 1 Gen 2) standard for a car that sees track and street. Usually, people get the Mobil1 ESP 0W-40 oil.

The 40 is the hot viscosity, 0W or 5W is the cold viscosity and that's indicative of what viscosity the oil will be at when cold. Cold viscosity for 5W-30 and 5W-40 will be similar, and 0W-40 will be slightly thinner than 5W-30 when cold.

Thank you, so for my case which is track use and daily cold weather driving, 5w-40 will be my best bet right?

Mobil 1 0W-40 can be used for both...

Nice to know a Camaro SS has the edge on the 392. A guy I work with used to have one and every chance he got he would blow by me in my V6 Camaro and my GTI, engine roaring. I would never engage although would have loved to challenge this guy on a track with an SS1LE.

I would use 5w30 oil for daily use and the grade of oil recommended for track usage listed in the owners manual. My 2016 SS used 5w30 for regular use and that’s what my 2017 ZL1 uses. I always use the oil grades that are listed in the owners manual.

In a straight line (and sometimes even autocross) competitive mode is faster. PTM Race still has TC turned on but competitive mode doesn't. OP's car also won't have PTM since it's a non-1LE SS, so it's either competitive mode or ESC/TC off.

Changing for daily use isn't necessary if using a proper 0/5w40 since those are also cleared for use on the street according to the owners manual. Typically the min temperature for 5w40 before it becomes too viscous is about the same a 5w30, unlike the 15w40 that was allowed for track use only and required being changed back to a 5w30, 5w40, or 0w40 before driving on the street.

Yeah a regular SS will be more than enough to destroy 392s on tracks, while a SS1LE will be a nightmare for them haha

Okay I was just confused on whether I should use 0w40 or 5w40, since I have pretty cold winter here guess 0w40 will be better for me

Thanks man, yeah mine is a regular SS, doesn’t have PTM. I always drive in competitive mode in track mode to make the power instantaneous, otherwise it is too laggy and too hard to break the tires loose.
I figured I should just use 0w40 for the cold winter here, thanks

id heavily consider a catch if you are going to run 0-40. mine catches a ton of oil that would otherwise be laying somewhere between the throttle body and intake valve.
