Shifter cable install

Hey guys, I’m having an issue where the shifter cable is popping off the trans linkage because the crappy plastic piece and end of cable is worn out. Probably from removing it 100 times.

I ordered a new shifter cable but I’m not sure if I can just take off the end piece that pops on the tranny, or take that bushing out if the new cable or if I have to replace the entire cable. The end piece looks to be threaded onto the adjuster rod, I just don’t know if that rod is hollow and the cable runs through it or I can unscrew the entire black end piece.

Does anyone have any diagrams or has done this before? I’ll replace the entire cable if I have to I just don’t know how difficult it is.

Here’s the pic of the cable.

Just wanted to update this. I was able to replace the entire cable.

What a nightmare. You have to take half the dash apart to get to the damn 2 inch hole that sits far back way behind the ac duct in front of center console.

Then you need to snake the cable which is almost as wide as the hole down to the trans.

The trans is right below the damn hole so it needs to go in/out on an angle or it just gets stuck. I removed the trans mount so the trans lowered and was able to push it out.

Putting the new cable in i snaked a fish stick through the top hole, zip tied end of cable and began pulling it up through the top. Of course it got stuck on the fat part of the cable hitting the trans and trying to make it through the hole.

After breaking my hand so I could turn it backwards I finally pulled that damn thing through.

I don’t want to ever do this again

I was under my car the other day and your thread popped into mind when I was under the transmission. So I decided to take a peek at what replacing the cable would entail and it did NOT look fun lol…glad you were able to get it. I’m assuming this would be much easier to do if you had the transmission out for one reason or another?

If the trans is out much easier yes.

Still need to take apart the dash but at least you can drop the cable right down the hole with no obstruction an inch away from the hole
