Decided to give golf a shot and don't know where to begin as far as buying a set of clubs. I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money on a set because I don't know if I'll even like it. I'm thinking somewhere in the price range of $200-400. What would you recommend as far as a good starter set? Thanks

honestly start off cheap, you may end up not liking it.

not to mention a pro golfer can play well with a terrible set of clubs.

Ping and TaylorMade R series good, believe you can get some R7's for cheap now.

When you play, don't scratch it off until you have played a few times. I didn't like it my first time out. But when you start hitting good once in awhile, you will want to play more!

I played in HS (everyone made the PGA Tour except me!) and college. You can check out the Play it Again sports places - kind of like a Sports Pawn Shop

Go yard sale....don't spend a lot of money right away, it will only add to the aggravation....lol....Start off with cheap 9 hole courses, watch the Golf Channel, and go from there....If you're lucky you'll get in one or two good shots per round, enough to get you hooked...

I have Pings for my irons, and a TaylorMade driver. Good advise get some old used clubs and spend some quality time at the golf range. Its a very humbling game but great exercise if you walk the course. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!.

I would also suggest checking out some YouTube videos on the golf swing. There are some very good videos that can help you get started on the basics. Golf, for me, is the most addictive and frustrating game I've ever played. It is a test of patience and persistence.

Check used stuff. My dad can make me look silly on a golf course with his 1976 Wilson Iron's and Woods, I have all post 2000 Taylormade gear.

Try some rentals, or Ebay. Start off at a driving range to see if you like it. Then learn proper mechanics and rules and etiquette of the game. I advocate for the game and help my non golfing buds when i can but nothing worse than to be out on a beautiful Saturday morning and have a 4 hour round turn into 6 because ur stuck behind someone that is a beginner and doesnt know the etiquette.

Your best bet is to rent until you're sure you're going to stick with it. I picked up a cheap set from Target years ago (Top Flite) and I still have them.

I can't play for shit. Still have yet to legitimately break 100. The clubs however work great and they've paid for themselves. I played pretty steady for a year or so though before I bought them.
