Weapon X Trunk Ice Tank

So while researching trunk ice tanks I looked at 2 options: the Weapon X version and the Synergy Motorsports version. The Synergy one looked a bit funky with an install that looked harder to boot, and with Weapon X having a sale on theirs that’s the way I went. Which I’m quickly coming to regret… but first things first.

So, here’s what the tank looks like. It’s designed to tuck into the “spare tire well” in our trunk. It comes with a ZL1 intercooler pump to push water to the front of the car along with a pre wired harness and about 30’ of 3/4” hose. Pretty neat idea, so I thought.

Now that will lower your intake temps. Looks awesome.

Good news out of the way, everything else has been a massive uphill battle. NO instructions at all. And I sent an email into Weapon X’s engineer but never heard back. NO one answers the phone no matter which option you choose. First, there is no method provided to securely mount the pump. So my shop made up a stainless bracket to keep the pump in place. Easy peasy. And there’s a drain to pull water out at the track (so that you can put ice in the tank once you drain it down some). But that just hung in the breeze as well, so my shop made a small bracket to steady the discharge too. Not too bad so far:

There is no instructions or discussion at all from Weapon X about how to route the lines and no method to mount the tubing either. So, another custom bracket was made (stainless, of course lol) to tuck the lines near the pinch welds under the drivers side noise deadening panel. My Fore fuel lines take up the space under the passenger side noise deadening panel, so we had to go drivers side (which made more sense anyway). We then added some coated hose brackets at a number of OEM M6 studs under the car too along with the new stainless bracket. Up above the front wheel well, we converted to stainless hard tubing (again custom bent up) to get around where it needed to go (over by the Rotofab BG to get to the intercooler plumbing). We tied into the intercooler lines using a high efficiency boiler piping trick called injection tees. This allows us to let the standard Whipple intercooler system to operate normally without melting all my ice while sitting in the track staging lanes (hat tip to my brother Jake for the idea). Then, I will flip on a switch to turn on the ice tank pump right before I get to the burnout box!

Here’s where it gets crappy. The design of the tank is simply not designed to work with an ice system…! An Interchiller maybe, since you can leave the tank closed all the time. BUT, THE BIG PROBLEM IS THE TANK IS NEARLY A FOOT LOWER IN ELEVATION THAN THE BLOWER BRICKS! This is a massive design flaw for an advertised ice tank!!! Any attempt to drain down the tank results in the bricks draining out and filling with air…. This would be a nightmare to purge out every single time you tried to add ice. That’s why the Synergy tank is designed the way it is, with a MUCH higher fill point! The Synergy fill point is nearly a whopping 18” higher than the WX tank, which makes it a much better design for an ice tank.

Furthermore, my shop will need to fabricate an ice screen for the pump inlet so that a chip of ice doesn’t clog the inlet tube. I can’t believe this WX tank is advertised as an ice tank.

To add insult to injury, WX screwed up the install of the Beckson Deck Plate fitting. The instant the tank got full, water simply poured out around the metal flange. I spoke with the manufacturer of the deck plate and he confirmed that you cannot simply RTV it to aluminum without scuffing the surface first and the RTV must cover the entire flange…as you can see, that didn’t happen.

So, to fix this train wreck we will have to pull the tank and weld in a tall riser onto the top of the tank, maybe 8-10” in diameter and 15-16” tall. This will allow me to drain out enough water to fit in a bag of ice *without* draining the IC bricks. Novel idea, right…

I’ll post pics once the surgery is complete…

WeaponX sells a lot of good stuff, but it appears that their ice tank isn't one of them

Looks like you overcome the lack of instructions and a properly designed kit, very nice install results, looks great! Just a thought on the drainage for adding ice, but what if you installed 1/4 turn ball valve(s) on the inlet and outlet lines coming from the pump, to hold the water from draining the lines and inter cooler bricks when you drain water to add more ice? There's already 1 for the main tank drain, inline ball valves could actually be lower profile depending on the type selected. If you're already planning to weld on an additional custom made riser, that would essentially solve your problem. Just thinking how others might resolve this issue if they didn't have the resources to modify the tank to overcome the whole issue with gravity that you already identified. Bummer, what a poorly designed system. At least you have plans that will make it work!

It seems that a lot of companies don't have good instructions or no instructions as in Josh's case. Its rare to even get paper instructions anymore, usually companies have you download instructions from there website and are usually poorly written.

Weapon X screwed me before too on my 112mm TB adapter. I was told by their sales guy that they only offered one version (to fit LT5 ZR1) so I had to pay my machine shop to modify it to fit my LT1/4 bolt pattern. A few days later their engineer writes me back (after I paid my machine shop) that they offered one to fit LT1/4 bolt pattern too…
