gen 6 ZL1 vs gen 5 z28 Nurburgring

Not sure about you guys but it seemed like the gen 5 was winning before the rain hit... Great side by side!

No it wasn't the ZL1 acceleration was way ahead of the Z28. The Z28 was slightly edging on the early corners, maybe. ZL1 was gaining huge as soon as it opened up.

Neat comparison. Thanks for sharing.

I really like this video!!!

The Z/28 was the benchmark set by engineers for the new ZL1. They will both put up similar lap times but in different ways...the Z/28 can carry a bit more speed through the tighter corners thanks to its tires...but the ZL1 can keep up in all other metrics, including braking...and absolutely blows it away with power and speed on the straights and sweepers.

I think even in the dry, the Z/28 would be a 6-8 seconds behind the '17 ZL1. We'll likely never know...

Here are some test data points I lifted from Motortrend:

......................................2014 Z/28.........2017 ZL1
Transmission........................M6............ ......A10
Weight (lbs)........................3858................3 926
Quarter Mile (sec)................12.3.................11.5
0-60 (sec)............................4.0.............. ...3.5
Braking 60-0 (ft)...................97...................96
Average Lateral G.................1.06...............1.06
MT Figure 8 (sec)..................23.6................23.1

Both are simply amazing.

The ZL1 was ahead most of the course, but the Z28 was clearly ahead until it started to rain. You can definitely see how it started sliding around as the windshield was getting wet. Though it's probable the ZL1 would still be faster, I think the lead may have only been 3 - 4 seconds at best.

I've watched this video several times before, it's still fun watching what these guys can do that I can't even do on playstation.

A friend of mine just bought a Z28. After I receive mine and get it broken in I hope to see him at the track. Then we'll get a comparison

You are correct the Z/28 was ahead right before the rain started. It would have been great if the rain wouldn't have started to have a closer apples to apples comparison. The ZL1 is impressive. Good job GM!

The ZL1 was a little ahead until just before 6 minute mark and then the Z/28 got a slight edge. They were so close!

Then they hit the straight and the ZL1's speed took over and it's win was certain regardless of the rain. More power to weight

I'd be curious to see the effects of the same square tire setup on the ZL1.

This is your answer of why the Z28 is almost as fast as a car that's lighter (I'm pretty sure at least) and got 145 more HP.

But let us not forget in this discussion that even if the ZL1 would to TIE with the Z28 on the Nurburgring, the ZL1 would still be a far far far better car. For straight line it wouldn't even be close, Z28 really runs out of steam with only 505 HP and a lot of aero. On a road the ZL1 is going to be way more comfortable, variable personalities with 3 different drive modes and 5 different PTMs coupled with a M6 with active rev match, launch control (Z28 may have this), line lock, or the A10 with near instant shifts...Plus the interior is far and away better. Not to mention it's a lot easier to mod a factory supercharged car for decent numbers, sure you could beat a bolt on LT4 by pro charging a LS7, but I'd not be interested in doing such a thing.

I could keep on going, but no 5th Gen is going to be as good as a 6th Gen

I've gotten the same feeling when I had a C6 Vette and the C7 came out, same thing that's happening now. I feel the need to move on/up, some people don't, that's fine.

Chevy is the real MVP here tho

Road course no doubt, it will be interesting to see how they compare in the 1/4 non-stock.

The Z28 actually caught and passed the ZL1 until the rain hit and the cars entered the long back stretch where the ZL1 could put more distance on it.

I've watched this video a while back, and I think take away(s) from this for everyone should be that 1) The Z/28 is clearly faster than the "official" time it is credited for, as the fact that it caught and passed the ZL1 in the twisties means on dry pavement it would have gained more time on the ZL1 at the end of the course. I think it would have only been 4 seconds behind. Not the 8+ seconds the official times show. 2) If the 6th gen Z/28 can put the power down as well, or better than the 5th gen, be lighter, and have that same level of grip and braking.....HOLY COW is it going to be a track monster.

2014 Z/28 is around 100 lbs lighter than the new ZL1.

z/28

HELLO FRIENDS ,
I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SEEN THE TIME TAKES OF THE Z / 28 ON THE SAME DAY OF THE G6 ZL1 AND WITH MANUAL CHANGE, BECAUSE IT'S A COVARDY FOR THE Z / 28 WITH MANUAL CHANGES COMPETING WITH ZL1 WITH SWING ON THE STEERING WHEEL IS MY OPINION.
