E brake failure

Hi,

My e brake actually failed today, was literally driving when I got an alert on dash that my electronic e brake needed maintanance, I stop and tried to use e brake and nothing car kept moving forward, I drive a manual trans so I was scared as I was at work and couldn’t park car anywhere. After a few restarts car alert went off and enrage worked again, should I be concerned? Thinking about taking to dealer but I have a lot of aftermarket engine parts but nothing on brakes

The snow/ice mode screws me up, lol. I tried it on we/muddy grass, and it made me stall the car, try to tap the throttle at low RPM... Tires would spin, brakes would kick in, car would stall before brakes let go, lol. Would do the same on snow/ice.

I run around in track mode with all the nannies off. Though, since 2007 or so, GM has actually had pretty good ABS systems... Good enough I don't pull the fuse anymore, lol.

Put it 1st or reverse when you park... I always use both, in case the park brake fails overnight, lol. It won't hurt the car at all.

If you have no brake system mods, they should still warranty the park brake.

Cost me a rear bumper.

I don’t want the car to park on the trans.
So my method:
In D or R I stop the car with the std brake,
Then I engage the e-brake,
Then when set, I release the foot,
The car move a little bit in D or R to set on the e-brake,
Then I put the trans in P.
The car is on e-brake not pausing on the trans P.
(It saves the trans not engaged)

Except this F.. e-brake is related to trans.
Because if you now put D or R and you accelerate, the e-brake will automatically disengage and the car will run D or R!
Stupid!
E-brake is supposed to be e-brake whatever and not disengaging if not disengaged.

My story:
Was backing in my garage,
Put my e-brake,
Thought I came back to P as usual, but was still in R....
My friend visiting me was looking at the car from the kitchen door,
I made a big acceleration (still thinking in P) to make the engine loud,
The 650 hp of the Z went straight in the wall !!!!!
Big loud sound, not the one I expected....

So the related E-brake to the trans (software/hardware...????)
Is damned stupid
Prefered it completely separated.

I like the e brake like the one on my Benz, it is easy as I have a bad left hip
My. wife and I use our parking brakes on all our cars
My dad had his car putted at a mall and took out the trans years ago in the 50 s
Brake first then put in park thats what we do all the time

The ebrake is fine with me it’s just what do I do if it fails kind of thing, definitely don’t want it to roll back or forth hitting a wall or worse another car. Anyone know of another way to stop car moving with manual transmission if ebrake fails? Just in case it happens again to me

If you're on a hill you can let the car roll back into a curb, or turn the steering wheel so it'll hit the curb before ghost driving down the street. You can also carry a wheel chock in your trunk if you're really worried about it.

On a slight incline having it in gear is enough it won't move.

I don't miss the hand brake at all. I grew up driving RWD cars in the snow. If I wanted the car to rotate more, I just stepped on the gas. I only ever needed a hand brake to get FWD cars to rotate.

That said, I do wish there was a light built into the toggle that would come on and stay on to verify it was engaged. That, or just have the toggle latch in an obvious UP position to make it clear that it's on. Then pull again to release. I do check the dash light, but sometimes I forget when I'm in a hurry, and I have to waste time turning the ignition back on to double check.

I like the functionality, I just hate where the button is and how it works. You have to awkwardly pull you hand back to touch it, and then it just doesn't seem intuitive to pull back on it to set it.

I think it would work much better as a normal button positioned more forward in the cabin where you can see it. And "push" to activate, "push again" to deactivate with a visual indicator on the button to indicate whether it is engaged or not.

Motorcycles park in gear all the time without any kind of brake. Your car will be fine parked in gear.

I have no issues with the E Brake. In fact, I prefer it to using a pedal or lever. Welcome to the 21st century.

It is exactly like an old fashion brake.
Pull up to set, push down to release. Seems intuitive to me.
Or forget it and start driving off and it releases automatically.

Agreed, I have no problems operating the thing either. A small "engaged" status LED would be very nice, though. Say, something similar to the steering wheel heating on/off button.

Also the sound is the servo from the brake activating. It's normal.

Yes! This is one of my many pet peeves and the average driver often neglects this step. When you are ready to apply the electric E brake or cable E break, first shift into NEUTRAL. Apply the break and let the car roll into the locked rear wheels. only then shift into park.
