Radar detector installation
Hey everyone
I want to get a radar detector Haven’t had one since the 90s and would rather not advertise too loudly when mounting however, how to balance performance and hidden mounting? I have a convertible so it’s likely windshield or visor I think Any tips or ideas? Looking at a Valentine V1R2. Want something decent but not to break the bank if anyone has tips on the unit as well. Thanks guys! |

Radar Detector
I bought a Radenso DS1 and really appreciate the range and straightforward menu. Its a compact unit and was easy to set up, and I just used the suction cup mount provided which has worked without a problem.

I have a Uniden R3. I have it mounted using a bracket I bought on eBay mounted to the glass with 3M tape right behind my mirror. Can't be seen from the rear but yet will detect behind me still. As for wiring, verts are tricky pulling the trim down to find keyed power. That took me a while but works with no issues.

Using a new Valentine 1 here and really like it. For mounting I used the supplied slim suction cup windshield mount up high next to the mirror on the drivers side. Being that the windshield real estate is small this is extremely discrete and easy access to hit the mute button if needed. The mount is stuck partially in the black painted dot matirx of the windshield and regular glass. To ensure this sticks I put a little glob of silicone on each of the suction cups. Easy removal of just the detector leaving the small mount when parking in a high risk area can quickly be done. If and when you want to remove the mount it will come done and a razor blade will easily get the remaining silicone off.

It'll absolutely be visible when mounted to the windshield or the mirror in a convertible, if you really want a completely stealth solution, you'll need to break the bank with an integrated detector such as the K40.
My personal setup has a Blackvue dash cam mounted to the windshield using their included, very strong and heat resistant tape, then right behind it is a cheap Uniden DFR9 that does 90%+ of what the R3 can do, but it's half the price and, unlike the R3, has the power socket on the right (passenger) side, which was a dealbreaker for me with the R3. I used a Blendmount mirror bracket for the radar detector, and wired it to the overhead console using Gen5DIY's harness, so there is no "wire intrusion" into the cabin, just the 4-5 inches of wire from the detector to the headliner, even less for the dash cam, looks 99% OEM. (Interestingly, the front edge of the factory headliner has a notch in the middle, seemingly for this very cable routing purpose.) This is the best one can do on the coupe, and it should work just the same way on the vert. Whenever driving through VA, the one state where detectors are illegal, I take the detector off and "clip" the cable to the detector mount, because I'm like that.

Mine does well with the visor mount. You will want to tap power from behind the rearview mirror for a less obvious installation (only possible on 2018 or older model years I believe). If officers use laser instead of K band or Ka band radar in your area, you are looking at spending a few thousand dollars to install a laser jammer which is illegal in a lot of places. |

Check out Vortex on Youtube. His reviews are impeccable. Actually he can be too technical for me. Watching his reviews helped me decide to get an Escort Redline 360C. The R8 is also a beast of a unit.

Rollin' with Escort 9500ix mounted to front windshield. Excellent tool that has paid for itself ten-fold
