Chevy Lumina Z34

With the constant drone of the regular complaints about the Camaro, being poor visibility and a non-existent back seat and trunk, maybe GM should have looked at the Lumina for a little inspiration.

While in it's basic sedan form it was nothing more than a replacement for the dowdy, awful Celebrity, I always loved the Z34 coupe:

My driving school had a full fleet of the Lumina Eurosport trim in 1993 and I drove one every day for two weeks in driver's ed class. I LOVED it. It had the automatic but damn if I didn't dream of buying one of these with the 5 speed when I was 16!

I remember merging on to the freeway once and not paying attention to the speedometer, and my instructor was like "hey watch your speed there Parnelly Jones"...... I was doing 80 before the end of the on-ramp

Yep. I worked at a GM dealer in those years. 3.4L DOHC. Pretty sure the 5 speed was only offered 1 year on the Z34 model.

Lumina was my first car, unfortunately not a Z34 though. Did it's job, can't say it helped me get any ladies in high school

The Camaro trunk is okay for me. I don't have a need for a backseat and I can't see for sh*t and I even have heavy tint on the glass. I have to lower the windows at times at night when its raining to make a turn or change lanes. But I have adapted to this.

I've driven a mid-90's 3.4 Cutlass Supreme. Can't say I enjoyed it. The styling was good enough to belong on a more likable car. A G-body follow-up that cuts front overhang.

I had a 96 Cutlass Supreme Coupe with the 3.1. I liked the car a lot. It was also my first new car/

My dad had a white Z34, 5 spd when I was in highschool. I learned how to drive a manual in this car.

I too had a 93 Cutlass Convertible with the 3.4 DOHC engine. I loved that car!! All leather interior, drove like a dream, had some real balls (for a six).

Only thing with that engine was the engineered-in oil leak that came from the dummy distributor shaft........you could not pull it out because the head was in the way. I had to grind a piece of the head away in order to get that damn dummy plug up about a quarter of an inch so I could stick an o ring on there and load it up with sealer.......never leaked again!!!!!

My ex- wife had a 94 z34 white had nothing but trouble with it. Started at 35,000 needed new heads then at 42,000 needed new alternator. What a job had to remove the strut and axle to get to it. Then at 50,000 the timing belt broke that was enough never had a car have so many things go bad before 50,000

A lot of intake manifold jobs were sold when it was really the dummy shaft seal. I really disliked a few of my coworkers at the time because they were blatantly ripping customers off. Remember, 2.8s, 3.1s, 3.4s and 3.4 DOHC engines all had it. I had a 3.1 in my 1990 Grand Prix STE. I never once had to do an intake reseal and drove that car to the crusher with 420000 kms on it. It was a great car. I do wish it had the 3.4 DOHC though.

Did you do the alternator on a lift?
I used to remove the bolt for the steering shaft, lower the rear of the cradle and then pull out the alternator. It wasn’t too bad and I could easily beat warranty time. I did lots of them as it was the heat that would kill the alternator.
The alternator, where it was located had very little airflow and what airflow it did have was mostly provided by an air diverter which really still didn’t provide enough airflow to cool the alternator.

The 3.4 felt lacking until 3k rpm. It was my dad's car I got to use as backup. I wish I talked him away from the kool-aid with that motor. It had the oil pump shaft leak, and went though coil packs. It seemed like it was designed to overheat; maybe because it used up most of the under-hood space. In summer traffic jams, I used to blast full heat driving gently, trying to keep temps lower. I hate seeing DOHC in engine specs to this day. A friend owning a much slower 3.1 Grand Prix had better luck.

I don't think the Camaro is to compromised.

Its a pony car after all and they never did have a useful back seat.(the 4400lb Challenger doesn't count as pony cars don't weigh in at 2tons plus)

If you have kids get a 4 door something from someone(Charger?)

The Lumina was wrong wheel drive and had a Mini Van brother that looked like a giant dustbuster
