Are the hood support covered by warranty?

Is it common for them to fail after two years? Mine won't hold up the hood and both are losing oil...

Both? That sounds unusual.

Thats very odd but if you have bumper to bumper still the dealer will replace them.

Some of these little hydraulic units seem to have a high failure rate. I have had several automotive recalls where they were replaced. At work we have hoods on some lab equipment and the service techs often replace these dampers. Only a few suppliers but a lot of different sizes.

Worst part, is even though they're likely covered, to me, it's pretty minor, and turning my car over to the service people just seems like more work than simply replacing them myself. I wonder if they'd reimburse me, if I just bought some and showed them these pics +my receipt. The right side has a puddle of puke from it.

As long as you are under 36K miles you should still be in the bumper to bumper warranty. I know many of us have an aversion to going to the dealer for warranty work. In a case like this though since the repair is straight forward and very visible to confirm its done right - I'd let the dealership handle it and keep my money in my pocket.

My wife's 2015 Murano which spends a lot of time in the garage, her hood struts failed just after the warranty expired. They are super cheap to replace, I think I paid 35 for a new set and wow, they work great. You probably have one that's defective.

struts/shocks/dampers, be them on the hood or on the tires are usually considered wear & tear items and aren't covered under most warranties unless you can show some kind of obvious factory flaw in their construction.

I would not be surprised if you call them up, they tell you tough luck if it's just the seals leaking.

Just my driver side shock failed, all I heard was a hissing sound and the hood slammed shut.

Best method would be to buy the pair and change them yourself, they’re like $20 on eBay I believe

Thanks. You may be right. The seals are leaking as well as they won't hold up the hood at all.

In the picture I linked, you can see how faded-to-pink my battery cable is. My guess is that when this car sat on the lot in Sacramento, they displayed it, hood up, for the four month duration.

The sun possibly baked the strut as well as the battery cable.

That's likely, as keeping the hood open for extended periods can indeed can cause premature strut failure on both sides, plus also explains why your power cable is so discolored.

The dealership should definitely take care of you, or if you don't want them to touch the car, you could try to just get the parts from them under warranty. However, the problem there is they have no control over your work, and are at risk if you, say, damage the hood or the paint in the process and then come back for more warranty fixes. If you don't trust them with the install job, I imagine they won't be thrilled either vice versa... you might want to find another dealership, a good service department is worth its weight in gold.

Well if you don't want to bring to dealer, they're not that expensive. Rock Auto $11.40 but only have 1 left. I think they list for like $17 bucks at dealer, provided they have in stock.
