Interesting LGX Break-In Period Find
I know this issue has been beat to death, but I found some interesting information regarding break-in periods on the LGX engine. The 2017 Buick LaCrosse is fitted with the same LGX engine (albeit, de-tuned) as the V6 Camaro, however there are no MPH or RPM restrictions for the Buick's break-in period. Furthermore, the break in period for the LaCrosse is listed at 500 mi. Seems strange that the break-in period for the Camaro is 3x longer than for the LaCrosse with the same engine.

If it's different tuning,, than I think that would be the difference factor in some way. GM also knows Camaro owners are going to beat their cars is a lot more than a Buick. Sounds like a warranty driven decision.

im not going to lie i only got half way through the break in period.. my car is at almost 7k and it runs just fine.
p.s. i am not super nice to my car. ALL the time either. when you can get on the car quite a bit and still get 19 mpg its quite hard to not use the power the car has all the time |

How much of the break in is for the engine and how much of it is for other things? Do the other cars you mentioned have limited slip differentials? Same tires? Are they rear wheel drive? As I understand it the break in isn't so much for the engine as it is the rest of the systems on the car.

OK now that right there is funny.
That said, I also drive a Buick, I romp it pretty hard too. It has a 10 inch woofer in the trunk, so when you see a little old man driving a 1999 Buick Lesebra like a hotrod, and it is booming and thumping, that would be me.

I read 4000 RPM max for first 1500 miles in manual.

If I remember correctly, the owners manual says:
For the first 1500 miles... - Do not exceed 4000 RPM - Do not exceed 80 MPH - Do not accelerate hard in a high gear at low speed (don't lug the engine) - Do no maintain a constant RPM for an extended period of time ... I think that was it. I admit, during my break in I hit 100 mph once, and tapped 6000 RPM a handful of times. But for the most part, I went very easy on the car and did not beat on it. I think that's basically what it boils down to... Just don't rag on it when it's brand new. I have 1700 miles on the car, now, and according to my onstar app, I've averaged 23 MPG over the lifetime of the car. That's not bad considering 80% of my driving is off the freeway. It also leads me to believe that I've been relatively gentle on the car up to this point. |

This is most likely due to the aggressive cam timing.
above 5k this engine reminds me a lot of the way Honda did VTEC back in the day. It kicks in hard yo |

Break-in happens much faster than 1500 miles, Chevy is just being conservative in their guidelines (they have to)
One of the best articles I've read on the subject http://www.ntnoa.org/enginebreakin.htm Key point: The higher the B.M.E.P, the harder the piston ring is pushed against the wall. The surface temperature at the piston ring face and cylinder wall interface will be greater with high B.M.E.P. than with low B.M.E.P. This is because we are pushing the ring harder against the rough cylinder wall surface causing high amounts of friction and thus heat. The primary deterrent of break in is this heat. Allowing to much heat to build up at the ring to cylinder wall interface will cause the lubricating oil that is present to break down and glaze the cylinder wall surface. This glaze will prevent any further seating of the piston rings. If glazing is allowed to happen break in will never occur. Also, if too little pressure (throttle) is used during the break-in period glazing will also occur |
