sorry to see that this happened. Always sad when metal gets bent, but glad you got to continue to run later in the day. nice to get back on the horse.

as for the damage, glad to see the air bags didn't deploy. I had just seen that thread where the guy's window curtain deployed during autocross and I was just thinking what a mess it would be if one of those deployed when jumping curbs on track. well, given they didn't open here, I think we're pretty safe banging curbs at speed.

Track Incident

Well it looks to me that you know that track VERY well. Your driving line is really good especially where you straightened out ESSES. I was watching the traction circle and when it turned red on the outside edge, that's where the car lost grip.

Personally that type of thing happens to me when I become fatigued as you were nearing I suppose the end of your track session I presume. I pretty much drive on the edge most of the time so I sometimes have to consciouosly slow myself down just a little. I admit thats pretty hard to do especially when you are chasing down cars LOL

Much respect for posting this, this CAN and DOES happen to everybody if you track enough.

Generally I agree but being on grass likely wouldn’t have made a difference. He might’ve been instinctively hoping traction would catch and then coerce the car away from the wall..

I agree. Thanks for sharing and letting us learn. Also, glad to see the repair was relatively cheap. Glad you’re safe too!

Btw, I left my last track day after only completing 4 of 5 sessions. I was simply getting tired. But I hate leaving when having so much fun. It’s threads like this that reinforces that sometimes it’s better to just pack it up and go.

By no means am I saying that was the case for the OP…. Just sharing my experience.

Glad you're ok and the fix was cheap. Kudos for posting it. Good lesson for us all, no matter level of experience. Cheers!

glad that it was a one panel fix...very straight forward!

I must say - that turn that you took the pass - were you in A group with open passing? Generally such a sharp radius turn would be a no passing zone....

I would guess it was more about setting up a pass before the esses vs making a pass per se, albeit the other driver did give a point by and made room, so a pass would be fine. Just my armchair 2 cents

Man, I'm sorry, that sucks. Hopefully a lesson learned and not repeated. The rest is bent metal and plastic. Glad you're ok. Lets get this fixed and carry on.

yes, the part # listed is a ZL1 fender and not a standard Camaro fender even though the description doesn't specify

open passing setting up to pass on the little straight between 3-4. I totally pinched, turned in too early, and placed my car too far track left looking up at the BMW...

Just got back from VIR myself recently. Considering you hit the armco, it worked out pretty well that you only wrinkled the fender. From that one pic you showed inside the VIR garage with some of the odd light reflections off the car, I thought you might have wrinkled the entire right side.

Because I'm trying to learn to improve my own driving, I hope you don't mind the following question: Do you think your spin was caused by having the car too far into the inside gators, or that you lifted off the throttle mid corner (I noticed you were on the throttle part way during turn in).

I wrinkled the door and rear quarter too...just not as bad. Turn 3 is an early throttle application zone pre-apex. The lift occurred as I was already rotating because of sloppy car position (as you said too far inside the gators). The car simply pivoted as it crested the off cambered area. It felt like the steering wheel turned itself left before I countered right. There are many black marks on the pavement there after turn 3.

Excellent summary Stephen: a Camaro terrier chasing a Bimmer bone, albeit a bit too hard Been there done it myself a few times, albeit managed to get lucky.

Btw if i may suggest: id check the RF rim for cracks and to ensure it isn't bent, as well as all control arms and such. Ya just never know...

Cheers!
