OEM Vs Aftermarket rims

I'm gonna pull the trigger on a set of rims 1LE or ZL1 (20x10 and 20x11) style.

im just trying to decide wither to pay the extra an go with the GM ones or go with a aftermarket and save some money.

what do you guys think? should i pay the extra? are the GM ones built better?

TIA

I'm sure the OEM ones are better quality but I am running MRR wheels and am pretty happy with them. One track day with no issues. If I decide to change them out in the future I will probably look for a gently used set of 1LE OEM wheels.

Depends on what you plan on doing with them. The GM ones are forged while most aftermarket in the money-saving price range are flow formed, meaning the GM ones will stand up to abuse better. That doesn't mean that the aftermarket wheels aren't OK for most situations though. If you're doing lots of hard track driving and bouncing off curbs or hitting other rough spots consistently you'll be more prone to bend most aftermarket wheels, but if you're not constantly going 10/10ths and slamming curbs on the track and running through potholes aftermarket should be just fine.

I love aftermarket rims. Just bought a new set from 4wheelonline, an American Racing Wheels.

Forged wheels are always better, OEM or aftermarket. I have MRR 1LE replicas, they are fairly good and hold their ground, but there is a reason the OEM SS 1LE wheels cost twice as much.

The SS 1LE OEM wheels aren't. I believe they are at flow-formed. Take a look at the info on the barrel - they say cast.

OE are forged. Dicastal is the company that makes the wheels for GM.
That being said, My aftermarket forged wheels shave more than 30lbs from the factory wheels while matching the factory specs.

Scargoes is correct, OEM SS 1LE wheels are fully forged. The difference in quality over cast-face wheel like MRR is significant IMO and well worth the extra money.

I went with 5th gen ZL1 factory reproductions. Love them.

Yep, some GM wheels shown there (Corvette and Camaro). With the weight of them, cast+flow-formed ("flow-forged") made a lot of sense, but I guess GM just put an extra layer of safety factor in there.

Like others said, if you track, oem or aftermarket forged. Autocross cast or flow formed fine. Street only same. All up to what you want safety wise. Cast are cheapest. I have a old set of cast xxr wheels I use for autocross from my old fifth gen and are fine after six years and 100 track days. Flow formed are good for most uses and run around $2200. Then there are
Forge lines and those and oem are tops for hard track use, but cost $6000

Like everyone says. It depends on your risk tolerance and wallet.

I ran 6 cheap wheels as a track set for several years on my 5th Gen. 2 cracked and 2 bent. I went with OEM wheels for the 6th Gen.

Just FYI, the Apex wheels you see on a lot of Mustangs, Camaro and BMWs at the track, whether it be HPDE/track day, time trial or racing are probably their flow formed wheels. A good (well-engineered, qualified and quality produced) flow formed is just fine for track work.
