Anyone find 0W-40 ESP in a 5 qt jug in a box store yet? I'm due for a change soon and all I can find is litre bottles here.

Sorry to resurrect this post. I ran across a document today that indicates that Mobil 1 ESP 0W40 is not suitable for Camaro 1LEs.
https://www.corvetteactioncenter.com...rint-1389.html

Does anyone from Chevrolet have input to this? Thanks!

----- edit ---------
Jsut realized that the "not recommended" applies to the ZL1, not the normal LT1 1LE, so I'll continue to use that oil.

The info is readily available. They switched to the esp 0 w 40 for less oil burn and prolonged cat life. No need to speculate

Same outdated list.
Shows several Castrol 5w40 that don't/no longer exist.
Still shows discontinued Valvoline MST 5w40.

I tried searching that list a while ago and only came up with a few still in production.

I was running the Valvoline 5w40 when it was discontinued and had to search for a new oil, I found that list and began my hunt.
The only choices I've been able to find on the market were Havoline 5w40, Motul 8100 5w40, and Amalie 5w40. There may be others, but these were the only ones affordable and easily ordered/purchased.

I ordered some Amalie on sale at a good price, see how that runs. I think Napa had the Havoline on sale recently too, found out after I ordered the Amalie.

Want to preserve this thread.....
3/14/21
Whos using Motul 8100 5w40? Still Dexos 2. Read good things about it... Dont usually choose French products for their high quality. Looks to be readily available.
Street driven 2ss, will be driven 12 months in NE. (Maybe.. Might get a beater...) Sub freezing temps. Commute of 15 minutes each way on back roads. (Not quite adequate full temp runs) Never driven really hard as the wifes commuter...
But Ill be blowing the gunk out whenever I can.
I always use the highest quality lubes in all my vehicles. This new Camaro purchase, and the 0w 40 recommendation has me reinvestigating everything on the market.
I originally intended to use the same Valvoline 5w 30 I use in my 6.2 Ford truck engine. I dont know how I feel about the 0w... Id be more comfortable with 5w 40.
I agree with the statement that I would rather replace my cats a bit early than have lower lubricity in my oil to save the damn cat. But Ill use Dexos to preserve warranty. Maybe throw some additive in...
Right now Im looking at the Motul because it seems to cover all the baces.

Thread Refresh

From Al's answer, I have a question for the forum experts.

Excerpt from Al's reply:
"For the ZL1 1LE, 15W-50 is the required track oil due to the increased lateral acceleration capability of the vehicle. It has enough of a grip capacity increase above all the other models that the added protection from 15W-50 is needed. The thicker 50 weight viscosity helps with oil pan drawdown when the oil gets hot on the track and reduces risk of pressure dropouts. For the ZL1, 15w-50 will add protection but is not required, as the 0w-40 was tested and provides adequate protection in a track environment"

I blew an engine at 15,000 miles due to oil starvation in my 1SS with the 1LE lowering kit, 1LE sway bar kit, ZL1 1LE solid read cradle bushings and Toyo RRs (40TW DOT slicks). I assume that if you approach the lateral grip of the ZLE 1LE you would want a more viscous oil, but does the LT1 get to high enough operating temps to get the 15W-50 oil hot enough to have good flow and not suffer oil starvation because it is too viscous?

My current plan is to add an accusump to deal with the oil starvation, but I am not crazy about that solution either as it could impact dealer willingness to provide warranty service in the event of another failure. I feel stuck in the middle of two suboptimal solutions.

Not a forum expert, but in the 2023 Track Prep guide it does specifically say that Mobil 1 15W50 can be used in a regular SS (and ALL 1LE variants, along with the regular ZL1, and being required in the ZLE). Given that, GM would be hard-pressed to deny a warranty claim for using the 'wrong oil', when it's specifically listed in their own literature.

Different car, but I believe all Vorshlag used in their S197 5.0 Mustang was Mobil 1 15W50, and it had no engine issues that I recall while setting numerous track records etc.

Motor oil is, and always will be (until we're all in EVs and I'm dead), the source of endless debate on the internet, but I'm inclined to believe if they recommend 15W50 as the ONLY oil for the ZLE on track, and they say you can use it in all other performance oriented Camaros, you can't hurt anything by running it in a gripped up SS. And may in fact help. Also, it seems to be notably cheaper than the DexosR 0W40, so that's a bonus. I just wouldn't run it in winter, for obvious reasons.

Thanks for the reply. I did run it once on track and it seemed fine. But I also drive my car to and from the track. Being lazy I left the oil in for a few extra days and the car went into limp mode on a trip to the mall (assuming it was oil starvation). I changed the oil to the Dexos daily oil and it exited limp mode. It was not winter as I only track during the summer months. So, even if it is good for the track, 15-50 is definitely not good for daily driving and should be changed immediately.

If the ZLE needs 15w50, I would imagine there are many ZL1 and SS cars that approach that performance nowadays.

I wonder with if DOD / VVT delete means there might be a happy medium now.
