play in shifter?
hey guys,
I just got my 1le back from having the trans rebuilt. There seems to be a little play in the shifter left to right. For example if the car is in neutral you can jiggle the shift knob easily left to right maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch before you start to feel the spring like resistance of the shift gate. There is no up and down play. Can someone see if their 1/le is like this or should I be concerned? |

Mine has a little play. It is a very rare thing. I looked into it... If yours is like mine, it shouldn’t fail or anything, but I would give everything a good inspection to very where the play is. My cars shifter is lose inside the pivot bushing (either a tolerance thing with the shifter ball, pivot ball housing or bushing). Nothing exterior of the shifter is lose. I don’t deem it bad enough to have a dealer put my car on a lift, bust my side skirts and monkey in a new shifter. If I lock down a reputable dealership service center in my area, i might do it. Or I’ll make it a winter project.

So there is no confusion, when I say very rare, I mean VERY rare. The shifter on the Alpha cars (similar between ATS, CTS and Camaro) is of the best semi-remote shifters I’ve seen and is very robust.
