First differential and manual transmission service

2013 2SS, LS3, 6 speed manual

These are the lubricants I came up with.

These are correct, right?

And should I drain the old oil when the oil is hot or cold?

Curious about the synchromax, just put Redline D4 in my trans. It doesn’t seem to be any better or worse than it was?

I’m going to service my diff soon.

Yes those will work. I used redline d4, it helped a little with cold shift chatter. Rear i used the GM stuff. You may still want to add a little lsd additive to the rear if needed. Warm is as l is always best, will flow out easier.

On the synchromax is says that it is for manual transmissions that require atf.

Which brings me to my next question...

I don't fully understand the idea of a manual transmission using atf. Why doesn't it use gear oil?

The manual transmission was designed to use lighter weight ATF instead of gear oil. Using Redline D4 may help smooth out your shifts. It worked pretty well in my first LS3 Camaro.

So, i drained out both diff and trans fluid.

Trans fluid looked as I would have hoped. Red and healthy looking. The proper quantity came out, so no leaks.

Diff fluid looked a little sparkly (metal in there) and there was a little build up on the magnetic tip of the drain plug. Is this normal? I am tempted to do some kind of a flush.

Fill up diff with 5w30 motor oil, spin the wheels by hand, then drain. Repeat a couple times. Good idea?

Yea, getting a little bit of flakes from the diff is normal. As long as you don't have chunks of anything coming out. I had the same thing on my drain plug. Flushing with motor oil? IDK, haven't heard of that and don't know how the clutch pack would tolerate it. I would just fill and send it, but that's just me.

Finished up.

I bought 2 quarts of royal purple maxgear for this project. I used 1 quart to flush, 1 quart to fill. The flushed maxgear had some metal in it, so I consider it worthwhile. However, i would not continue to flush with more maxgear.

I've been running both for a while. Really love the syncromax. Smoothed out the shifts pretty good

Like stated some metal in the rear is normal wear and good as long as there is no chunks of metal. Personally when I “flush” my rear I do the change and drive it for 500 miles then change it again. It only takes a quart and is easy to change with ramps. The only hard part is getting in the ratchet to remove the fill plug with aftermarket exhaust.

it might remove some debris but I doubt much as it is not a solvent.

motor oil and any other liquid including water "IS" a solvent. what it can dissolve depends on what it is made of.
