ZL1 diff & driveline upgrade

Well, the inevitable happened. Something broke and it was the rear end.

Went to Mission Raceway Park a few weeks back and on the last launch, had some wheel hop and the rearend started to howl and make noise.

Limped it back home and it's been parked since waiting on the dealer to bring in the ZL1 upgrade kit.

Going in the shop this week for the swap. This kit is not cheap, but at least now I can go the next step in power mods, if I so desire (sinister laughter follows).

Hey man how do you like your 391 gears? I just did my first mods, cam and suspension next. I was just wondering if its to much once you get 450+ rwhp

You're going to like the ZL1 driveline kit, nice upgrade to the stock SS driveline. Only downfall is it's pretty damn heavy

3.91s make the car fun. I also installed the ss4 at the same time but I love it.

The 3.91 gears are awesome, they add so much get up and go to the drive. But in the quarter I had to shift to 4th.

The ZL1 gear set will be 3.73 which I think will keep me out of 4th on the track and 3rd in the autocrosses.

Thats what I been contemplating 3.91 or 3.73 especially if I add boost later. I thought zl1 was the same 3.91

Finally home from an extended work trip and have put on 300 kms on the new ZL1 drive line. My impression of the ZL1 rearend, axles and driveshaft is that it feels more substantial under throttle and there is absolutely no noise (so far). The diff housing is HUGE and I'm lucky that my SS designed exhaust clears it.

There is a slight difference in the "seat of your pants" feel versus the 3.91 gears, but not that substantial. The 3.73's are really more street friendly and I'm hoping that I'll be able to finish the 1/4 in third gear now.

Would like to put another 300 kms to put on it before my first auto-x event mid-August. I think it will be easier to drive as it will be less sensitive to throttle input and make it smoother on the tarmac.

[QUOTE=Avalnch;9237376] I'm hoping that I'll be able to finish the 1/4 in third gear now.

Not with your horse power, you should have went with the 3.23 ratio if that's what you wanted.

Thanks for the confirmation. Yeah, everyone's been telling me this. The 1/4 mile is not important, just would have been nice.

This thing is massive. Exhaust on the passenger side barely clears.

Did you have to do anything to your SS rear cradle? Banging, cutting, enlarging bolt holes?

Am I looking at axle half shafts or the main driveline?
