ZL1 vs 1LE for weekend Road Race Events

So glad to find this forum. I am not a Camaro guy, but the ZL1 and 1LE have got me staying awake at night wishing I had one. I am a driving instructor for a private track group. I organize private track day events and currently have a dedicated weekend track car. The lure of the ZL1 with it's 10spd or the 1LE with it's track suspension are amazing. I know either option is heavy for track duty.

Question for the track enthusiasts on this board. Would the ZL1 10spd auto suffice as a dedicated track warrior with a set of hoosiers and brake pads? Any issues of over heating trans or anything? The 1LE is so much more....I was wondering if the ZL1 was good enough or if there really is that much of a difference. I am a 25 year veteran racer and capable of reaching the envelope of each car. I want one of each.

I went with the 1le so I am partial. I would think with your abilities and the amount of stress you can apply to the car you would want a manual either way you go but if you really want to enjoy the fruit of your ability it would be the 1le

Honestly, I believe the extra speed of the 1LE is 90% the tires it uses. So, if you're going to throw on slicks, I don't think there would be much difference between the two on the track.

Tires might make up a quarter of the difference . I can say that the difference between the standard z06 tires and the z06 z07 package tire is not much on the track

When pushed really hard on hot days the A10s will overheat on the track. I've seen it multiple times with my own eyes. The people who claim otherwise usually don't push their cars.

I would strongly recommend the M6 for a hardcore track car.

I went with the ZL1 A10 and I bought it to track on Circuit of the Americas and HHR. So far no problems what so ever, my transmission temps have not gotten over 250 degrees in any session. I took some minor precautions to assure the transmission lines were heat shielded from fore to aft.

Again, no issues. I'm not the most advanced driver, but if you watch my PDR video I don't think you would think I was being "Easy" on the car, in fact anything but, I'm pretty ****ing reckless and was running sub 2:35s on street radials and stock pads.

Good luck with your choice!

I had the pleasure to ride along with Luke (driver in the videos below) last summer. He has a (currently) stock ZL1 A10. He made that car dance in ways I've never imagined...and that was on stock tires.

It is an incredible machine on the track - I can't imagine what it would be like with slicks and track pads.

The only situations I've heard of A10s overheating on the track were where the transmission fluid either A) was not set to the track level as prescribed by the owners manual, or B) The procedure wasn't done correctly.

Now...the ZL1 1LE is an entirely different story. It's 100 lbs or so lighter, but the magic is not just in the tires, or the suspension, or the aero...rather in how it all comes together. It's so much more than the sum of it's parts. However, if you had the desire - a lot of that could be added to an A10 ZL1, later. It would be much harder to put an A10 into a ZL1 1LE, I would think.

The DSSV dampers, much stiffer spring rates, and hard-mounts would really let the slicks shine out there.

Do you want a car to replace your dedicated racer? Or do you want a car that will be excellent on track, and drive you around town in comfort? Answer that, and I think you'll know which one to get.

The 1LE's Solid Body Mounts, M6 Trans and Aero Wing will made a HUGE difference on the Track.

ACR was gone pretty quick. Still pretty impressive for a fully stock ZL1 to have kept up that long!

Can’t wait till my ZL1 1LE shows up!

OP: Thanks for all the feedback. The 1LE clearly is the track winner, it’s just my budget. If the ZL1 A10 can handle 10/10ths for 25 minute sessions on Hoosier R7’s with track pads and SS brake lines, I could probably make due. Good tips on keeping the trans lines shielded and proper fluid. Thank you all.

Any great deals out there? I keep waiting for the small dealer who ordered a ZL1 1LE by mistake and can’t afford to keep it in inventory. Better deals on A10’s. Fear the Z28 with ZR1 motor crushing the market on these other top models. Some have said the SS 1LE is a Track bargain?

I frequent COTA. I’d love to instruct or ride with you COTA guys. I run 1:27’s. Search my EMP EVO COTA vids on YouTube when time allows.

Is that a new, not pre-owned purchase minus any trade in? Any special employee discounts? That makes it nearly doable. In New Hampshire? That would be a fun drive back to OK.
