Question Re-wrapping or replacing steering wheel

My suede steering wheel looks and feels terrible. It's already worn through the alcantara in the primary hand positions, and has some sweat staining I've been unable to remove.

I was thinking of having the same wheel re-wrapped in leather or fresh alcantara (to keep the factory look). Anyone done this? Otherwise, might just buy a factory SS leather wheel.

Is replacing the wheel a DIY job? Haven't done it before, curious what tools are needed and how to deal with the air bag.

I have used a company before called Dallas Steering Wheel - they did a nice job.

A fellow San Jose 1LE owner, welcome!!

I just got my 1LE a few weeks ago. I just placed an order with Wildhammer to replace the wheel and shift boot with the standard SS leather ones.

I can't stand the Alcatara for daily driving. It feels weird and gives me chills, like running a fingernail across a chalkboard. With gloves on and on the track it would be awesome, but for daily driving with bare skin, it sucks.

I saw a guy at a car show with a '17 1LE and took one look at his wheel....

I went home afterwards and instantly ordered these, lol.

My car is my weekend Warrior, but still...one glance at his poor wheel made me cringe.

Maybe its just me but NO WAY can I possibly bust out driving gloves driving down the street. If my wheel gets that bad I will just replace it heck with it!

Do you have any pics of this? How many miles/track days with it?

I can take some when I get home. I have 6 track days, 11000 miles total. I use gloves on track, but yeah, not dealing with that on the street.

I will say the alcantara rules on track with gloves -- a lot better grip than leather and your hands don't fatigue as much.

It may just be dirt and skin oils. I had spots that looked worn too but was able to clean it and the shift knob with this stuff, a damp towel and a soft brush. Works great!

I did buy a spare steering wheel for down the road though because I plan to drive it for ten years...

I've been seriously considering buying some gloves. I really like those. Might have to pull the trigger

I have had these gloves for over one year now. They seem to be holding well, they are soft. Good purchase

I love the Alcantara against bare skin however driving the car makes my palms sweaty. I find myself constantly drying my palms on my pant legs. Gloves may be the answer but I would hate to be "that guy".
