HUD requires a special reflective material to exist in the windshield. It will not 'activate' HUD if you dont already have it.

Tell them to put OEM windshield in. Your insurance is just trying to get by for as cheap as possible.

I had my windshield replaced by Safelite about a month ago with non OEM glass. So far no issues. I wouldn't even know if they hadn't told me. As mentioned above, if you don't have HUD, getting the glass would accomplish nothing. They ask because it's a special glass and much more expensive. Now, if you're a bit of a car snob about those things, you can request OEM glass but it will probably take extra time to get it. Safelite told me they have to order it through the dealer. To me that seemed like a waste of time since they guarantee their repairs for life.

I just found out the replacement will not be OEM. Does anyone know about the quality of aftermarket windshields for the 6th Gen Camaro?

Also, the glass place kept asking me “are you sure you don’t have HUD?” I’m curious, if I pay the extra for an HUD windshield, will it function on a 1LT V6?
Only responding to the HUD part of the question. Does your car already have HUD? I wasn't aware it was offered on 1LT V6. If you do not already have HUD, getting a HUD enabled windshield will not give you HUD. There is a projection device in the dash. The windshield needs to be capable of receiving the image, as Gabhart suggests.

Go OEM, and please avoid Safelite. You’ll be glad you did. Safelite sucks big @ss!! Had them replace windshield on my wife’s then days old new SUV (long story),and the so called tech scratched the hell out of the driver side mirror. To add insult to injury, Safelite refused to fix what they screwed up. Do what you want, but I’d Pay the extra cash and take it to a reputable shop if you want it done right.

Do the aftermarket "HUD capable" windshields work as good as the OEM if you have HUD? I would be skeptical.

Not sure about that, but the quality and the fitment is where I would be at.

We replace windshields here every two years. , sometimes annually. The gravel on the roads, used as "sand" in the winter, results in a WS that looks like it was used for BB gun target practice in a season or two.

I found that aftermarket replacements tend to be soft, as they will pick up FAR more chips and dents from gravel, than the OEM WS's.

We ALWAYS specify OEM.

Read your policy and see if allows for Like, Kind, Quality. If it does stop listening to the internet, the insurance company can replace with an aftermarket. I've had 4 aftermarket windshields over the years, no big deal, you'll most likely not even notice. On today's car the windshield is a part of the structure.

"In front end collisions, the windshield can provide up to 45% of the structural integrity of the automobile. The rigidity and strength of the windshield is essential for maintaining the structure of the vehicle's cabin during collision. ... The car windshield has developed to become a key safety component for your vehicle.Apr 9, 2015

I had safelite replace mine,, but would most likely not do that again. I had OEM replaced in my 5th gen and the OEM lasted longer. The non-OEM is picking up chips 2x as fast.

Our Jeep goes through windshields every couple of years because it's so vertical. Satellite uses OEM because our Jeep has little Jeep icons embedded in the glass. But, never let them do it unattended in the parking lot. Bonehead must have dropped across the hood, chipped the hinges, and scraped the hood paint. Tried to deny it, but eventually prevailed since there is no way off-roading could have caused that type of damage. Lesson learned. Never let anyone work on your vehicles without watching like a hawk. Better yet, DIY.
