I really always wanted the black wheels so this will actually work out good for me.

The car goes to the dealer tomorrow for the repair. I'll post up pics after the wheels are redone, hopefully they come out well.

The dealer said they have never seen this issue before on any wheels but it certainly looks like a paint product problem.
since they are refinishing anyway it seems unusual that they would charge you extra for black paint.after all,you are without your car for that time period.

Logic be damned, this is GM warranty rules. The factory black wheels are $200 more.
I remember they did the same 3rd party refinishing with the chevy cobalt gunmetal wheels that didnt hold up well. After they were done the finish was much better than factory.

Yeah I worked the deal out with the wheel repair company on the side, independent of the GM warranty work. Basically GM warranty covered breaking down the wheels, blasting and painting them in the original silver color. The wheel repair shop said to change to gloss black would be and extra $50 per wheel..I was ok with that, but the wheel shop was definitely trying to make an extra buck. Nothing to do with GM making money.

I wouldn't have to much heartburn over the extra $50.00 per wheel with the refinishing company. If you factor in that they most likely was looking at refinishing the front side of the wheels only and didn't need to do the entire rim, going black they had to prep and finish the back side of the rim as well. I can see the justification from them on the charge.

PS: Rims look great.

I agree man. I had no problem with the $200 at all.... If I had decided to change the color of the wheels on my own and not utilized warranty repair etc, this would have easily cost me $700-800+.

Plus they did a really nice job on the finish. Hopefully it lasts.

The black really gave the car some attitude with the blacked out grill/emblems.

I know this is going to sound weird, but I think it looked a lot better with the silver caps granted that your car is silver. It kind of tied together well and gave the wheels more "dimension" to them. And with the chrome lugs, it doesn't look that totally out of place. Kind of futuristic looking, as if the tires are floating around the center caps.

The base wheels are junk, thin coat of either black paint or silver paint with a thin coat of clear. Not very durable. I only use mild car wash soap by hand with a soft sponge and light spray from house. In 2 years time all our base wheels will be doing it.

Resurrecting this dead post! My 2016 Silver 1SS wheels are doing the same thing - All four wheels in certain spots. Black showing up underneath the clear coat, on the rear right wheel it also looks like the clear coat is gone on large parts of the spokes too. What do you all think the chances are of a dealership getting this taken care of? The car is four years old at this point and I am the 2nd owner. Less than 15,000 miles on the car.

Alternatively, you could embrace your new, free black wheels that other people pay $ for
