GY S3 vs. GY S3R for AutoX?!??
Anyone have experience on both for autocross where tires never get up to temp? I have the option to use either. The 3R......while amazing on big road courses, seem really slippery when “cold” during the out lap (especially the first out lap of the day).
Would the regular ZL1 S3s be better for a short auto-cross type track???(specifically looking at an event that runs on the Buttonwillow Kart track) |

I have not done both, but the 3R's are not for autocrosses at all. If you can swing it, get the RE-71R's in a 305 square.
I would think the only way the 3R's could possibly work is if they are cycling the cars through rapidly (so the tires can't cool much) and doing 4+ laps, or you run all the laps at once with no stopping. Otherwise the 3's would be better. Another thing I just thought of....Does the sanctioning body that is running the event allow UTQG rating of 100? If it's minimum 200 then the 3R's are automatically out. |

Thanks for the feedback......that’s kinda what I’m thinking......the base S3s will be better for colder tire temps. Anyone else care to weigh in? |

I ran my factory G3R's last season for autocross until I corded them near the end of the season. They gripped really well, the 1st run cold they would be a little loose but after that they would do great. A few of our SSR corvette guys that run Hoosiers were even impressed with the grip and how soft the compound would get with heat in them. Now with that said, I am back on 71R's after I killed the G3R's and do think the initial bite is better but if I only had the option of G3 and G3R I would still probably go with the G3R due to the in theory softer tread compound (100tw vs. 220tw)

I've run the stock SC3 at autocross and was quite pleased with them after the 2nd run. I started with too low of a pressure but once they got warmer and pressure built up they were good. It was a day with mild temps for SoCal (October in Fontana CA). I'd expect them to be better with higher ambient temps.

I was running HOT pressures of 30psi front and 26psi rear on the G3R's.

I ran RE71's which were really good. For non-point events, I ran the stock G3's to save the RE71's. They were a lot better than I thought they would be. The stock G3's did not have quite the grip and they took longer to get up to temp, but they did not detract from the fun. I would not use either the G3 or G3R's to do hero runs, but the G3's were great if you were not looking for those final 10th's.
