How well does a non 1LE SS handle on a track?

Just wondering. Its real easy for me to break grip so I find myself being careful around curves and what not. How competent is a non 1LE SS on the track?

Also... if one wanted 1LE performance without buying a 1LE, how feasible is it to do the upgrades? or would it be better to just go aftermarket?

Physical components won’t be hard to do. You can actually get the 1LE suspension from GM. You can also get your magnetic ride, if you have it, reporgrammed to 1LE software. If you don’t have magnetic ride, any quality coil over should get you close to where you’d want to be. The only thing that can’t be had, is the eLSD. I’m not aware of a means to add that and have the functionality in place in a non-1LE.

It depends on how far you want to push the car. If you want to drive right at the limit or beyond and seconds matter, you will miss the eLSD and other features of the 1LE. If you are just out to have fun and drive hard and fast around the track the SS will do the job just fine. Upgrading the suspension and getting wider tires will get you most of the way there but you'll probably end up spending just as much or more than the cost of the 1LE package, except you won't get the goodies like Recaro seats, HUD, etc.

That said I wouldn't hesitate to track a non-1LE SS. I had an A8 1SS before my 1LE, and it was a beast on the track. It did not have magnetic shocks so it was a little mushy in the bends but man, I am really nitpicking there. I would say that still, even without mag shocks, that car dominated on the track. And the 1LE takes it even a step further

"real easy to break grip", seriously? The FE3 SS already lays down nearly 1g on the skidpad. This smells of either mismatched expectations and/or strange driver inputs. The probability of the latter is incredibly high in the USA. If you indeed have a '17 2SS and a '99 Z28, the latter should handle like a dump truck in comparison.

On a technical note, the eLSD and PTM software can't be retrofitted to a normal SS.

It's also far more expensive to put together a "1LE package minus the eDif" when building it for order, you can do it, but it's ridiculous (looked into it before they came out with the 2SS 1LE).

Tires make a huge difference, make sure you are rocking summer performance tires, unless it's winter-time and then either all-season or winter, depending on where you live.

The non-1LE SS is VERY trackable. It has all the coolers neccesary so overheating won't be an issue, almost 1g on the skidpad, 24.1s in the figure-8, tons of power with no turbo lag, outstanding chassis, four-piston Brembo's, and unblelievably ballanced (with a bit of understeer). It is a VERY easy car to drive fast. The only thing you should upgrade is the brake fluid. Yes, you can go with better brake pads, stickier tires, etc., but it is NOT neccesary to have fun.

BUT, the question is, is there some sort of times you are expecting at a certain track? Or are you just wanting to get out on the course and have some fun. Because, if it is the latter, the regular non-1LE SS checks all the boxes.

The added bonus is that the consumables are less expensive in the non-1LE. The front rotors are like $79 each. The tires cost less, but the pads are a bit pricey, maybe just a bit less.

Mine does just fine on track. The real question comes down to your driving talent/experience. Tons of folks in "fast" cars get passed by people in much slower cars all the time. I wish for the 6 piston Brembos as they were better on track in my 2015 Mustang GT than these 4 piston Brembos are, but they're not bad.

The standard 6th gen Camaro is one of the most track-capable cars in it's class. No, it won't handle like a 1LE, but you can still add a few aftermarket goodies to make it go from excellent to outstanding.

You're never going to be able to "build" it up to match what the 1LE has, and even if you got close to it, as other comments have stated, it's going to cost you a hell of a lot of money.

You already have a very capable car my friend, enjoy it!

If you are having issues with pure mechanical grip, which it sounds like you are based on your initial post, I would start by checking your alignment and upgrade your wheels/tires. Also throttle modulation is a great tool.

Very interesting. Sounds promising.

For me it seems anything more than 1/3rd throttle even in a straight line at any speed below about 35 - 45 and it gets a bit loose. It has surprised me a few times here and there - most notably on Parmer Ln (Austin TX) - Mostly straight - at about 30ish MPH I gave it about 1/2 Gas to pass someone... rear slid out but not enough to make it dangerous but enough to make me pull my foot out of it.

Anytime I'm turning from a dig onto a main street I find I have to becareful with it. I was pulling out a restaurant of which there is a curve causing a blindspot to perpendicular traffic on the main street, I pulled out thinking it was clear and someone came flying around the curve so I gave it somewhere around 1/3rd gas... she went RIGHT for the curb... There was no wheel spin sound / screaching, nothing.. one moment I had traction, next moment it was gone. I had to pop it in Nuetral to kill the skid and prevent myself from nailing the curb, the guy coming around the curve went around me.

As for the alignment - Steering wheel is straight, also recently had the alignment redone as I just had a whole new rack put in the car...

Maybe its the tires?

Reason I ask, My Z28 (albeit less power) has 19's and is on 275's front / 295's rear Kumo's & 19" wheels but never ran into these issues on that combo EXCEPT when I had bad tires (and by bad, as in when I first got the car way back in 2013 it was on 4 mismatched bald tires and was so unstable you couldnt even keep it straight at 65 MPH.)

I beat the crap out of my non 1LE on the track and it keep asking for more.
The Achilles heel is the brakes. I find that even the 6 pistons, on some tracks, is not enough (with sticky tires). Speaking of tires...well... it's a fast car that will cost you tires.

I assume you already have swapped out to better brake fluid right?
