Id say you're looking at getting an SS 1LE. And go from there.

The easy answer is to just get the new 1LE. Matching its track performance ought to be possible, but it didn't happen with a number of approaches taken by Chevrolet themself in their own testing with a variety of GM over-the-counter kits.

Im looking to see if it would be more cost effective to convert a base SS to a 1LE and take the cost savings |

Well, the not-so-easy answer is probably going to have you looking into possible differences in stability control and ABS calibrations.

What about 1LE and base SS? Im not really worried about the stability anyway since I turn all that stuff of, but I would be seriously interested in the ABS calibrations as I would like that on track. |

The answer to that is NO. Sure you can add the 1LE spec suspension kit to a regular SS but there’s a few things you can’t just add. Namely the eDiff, PDR, and PTM. Those three things (in my opinion) are what truly sets the 1LE apart from a track modded SS. The diff is magical for putting power down off corners and if you use PTM properly 90% it will make you faster, and of course you gotta love the PDR! So yea if you are gonna go with an SS go for the 1LE.

Perhaps that would be a good question for the 'Ask Al' section. Norm

Ok! Good to know! I keep forgetting about the ediff.... Thats because most of the time ediff is mentioned, its this idiotic idea of braking individual wheels and calling it limited slip. |

The one thing you will never get with the base SS is the ELSD. For that reason alone the 1LE is the way to go!! And id live to sell you mine but if your looking for those track day numbers, 1LE erry day

If you want to mod a car start with a C5Z and then throw money at it. Proly best cost effective platform to build a track car out of a street car.
If you want a street car that will do double duty and outperform cars costing twice or even three times more, then SS 1LE is a no brainer. Simply said, it is a Vette GS with 2 extra seats for half the cost. It doesn't get any better than that imo. Especially that it is easier to drive at 10/10ths owing to its superb balance right out of the box bone stock (with proper alignment). And it has far better seats too (i dont miss my old 5 point harness at all). And yes, as others have said: e-LSD = magic! |
