Dealer got two allocations, now what?

My Chevy dealer told me that they got two allocations for Camaros. Said the PDR needed to come off the build but everything else should be good. Said he didn’t see a constraint on the vivid orange which I thought I saw reported here at some point.
So what happens now? He said he can put the order in next Tuesday. Does that mean I’ll actually be good to go or is there a chance the order still might not get picked up by GM?

Hey there! From my little experience, the allocation means it will be picked up by GM, meaning it the order will proceed beyond 1100, which is always good news But how quickly things move beyond that will depend on various things, and it's not guaranteed that your car will be built in N days once it's accepted for example.

In my case, I reached status code 3400 relatively quickly (took maybe 2 weeks or so?), and it has a Target Production Week (TPW) of 11/22, however I'm finding out the build is being delayed, for reasons unknown to myself and my dealer.

At this point, I expect it the car won't be at the dealership until early January, but that's admittedly just a guess on my part.

It's all about patience, my friend

If you can get to the 2000 status code it means GM has accepted the order and that you have a good chance of being built. It doesn't mean it will be built quickly but its better than being stuck at 1100 which means the dealership has submitted the order but GM has not accepted it.

I would probably go for it without the PDR and get yourself a good GoPro.

Agreed, if your dealer has an allocation then grab it. Many folks are waiting months just to get an allocation.

The other piece of the allocation game is that if you don’t take advantage of it and alter your order for acceptance, the dealer will place a different order or have to pass on it. That allocation will then be lost and your back to waiting.

Once you hit allocation, things generally start to move quicker and you get into an actual “line” or sequence for your build. See my order progress below, roughly two months from allocation to build for me, now just waiting on rail transport.

Are dealers able to tell you (or even estimate) when their next allocation is? I'm about to proceed with an order at my local dealer but am being told 8-12 months! Maybe that's the reality for most dealers now???

So, that is a tough question to answer. Dealerships, when it comes to allocations from a manufacturer, fall under a district manager, They get all their allocations from this district manager, and the district manager can give an allocation to a dealership when they normally are not due one. This can be for various reasons, including the one most here care about: a dealership needs an allocation because a customer has special ordered a vehicle. So back to your question: does a dealership know when they are getting an allocation, not exactly, but they can look to their past history and guesstimate when one is expected.

Now, with covid and supply shortages, most dealerships are very wary of giving a date because things are not running "as usual" and so don't expect anything but a vague promise.

I don't think so. My dealer actually has three locations. The gentleman that put my order in does the ordering for all three dealers. Seemed like he was surprised it took this long. For me it was a couple months from putting the deposit in to getting an allocation. I know others have waited much longer. He said he has a meeting with the District manager 1-2 times per month when allocations get passed out.
I'm gonna get an order in even if it can't be my exact build. I already started ordering some parts for it so there is no going back now lol.

Thanks for the extra insight re: district coverage - much appreciated. It reaffirms my view to just get the order going with my local dealer (who are a large volume dealer) and que sera sera...

I purchased a 2022 Camaro 2SS a week ago. I didn't find out that the dealer installed items (stripes, ground effects, gas door and red knee pads) have not arrived even though the dealer made it sound like they had it all and would schedule me for an appointment the following week for the install. The next week I found out the they only wanted the car in for PDI and said the parts are on back order with no eta. Something doesn't seem right to me. should I be concerned?

Thanks

So, a dealer is responsible for what it decides to install on a car. If they claim they are installing X, Y, and Z, but they can not install some/all of X, Y and Z because said items are on back order, they are creating a problem they can fix themselves.

Now, you can tell the dealership you will take the car without the items installed. You can even tell them that you will not pay for these items to be installed (that may not go over well for you at the moment due to market conditions). If they tell you the items must be installed, then they are playing games with you. Question then becomes: do you want to play their game and wait while also paying for these items, or walk away and look for a better deal elsewhere.

I did take the car home the same day not knowing they didn't have the parts. Now they say they have no idea when the parts will arrive. Kind of feel like they pulled one over on me. I really didn't even want to take it that day I was ok leaving it there for the PDI and the rest of the parts to be installed. They really insisted I take it that day instead of leaving it on their lot. So I ended up taking the car back to the dealer hour and a half each way just for the PDI.

I thought when cars are ordered with dealer installed accessories that the accessories will be installed before purchase because otherwise you are buying something not as advertised. If it were me they would have to give it to me in writing and guarantee that they owe me the parts or parts & installation as per how the car was supposed to be built. I don’t think you’re going to be able to say forget the accessories and get money back on them because you already purchased the car. Worst case get the parts and choose if you want them installed or sell them.
