The 2LS is not a "base" Camaro as it represents a base model plus options. Even a 1LS with a single option could technically no longer be considered "base" since the whole idea of that model is ZERO options added.

You are right about Holden, but the article thinks GM wants to sell the Camaro there:
The recent decision to push forward with the General Motors Special Vehicles brand paved the way for the Camaro ZL1 to replace the Commodore in the series, however, and is a clear sign that GM plans to sell the supercharged Camaro model variant in the country under the newly established GMSV banner.

went over this like 2 years ago. Production of the camaro will stop for about 2 years because the platform they are developing isnt set to be released until then. So instead of continuing 2 years on the alpha platform with no changes, it will go away for a while....but not forever

What are rules for the Supercar races? The Commodore stopped production in 2017 but will still be allowed to race through at least 2021? This may be nothing more than a way for GM to continue to compete even once the car is no longer produced, for an extended period until they come with something else.

The Camaro, including the ZL1, have been sold in Australia after being re-fitted to RHD by Holden. So, what does this announcement really change?

this article supports what you write.

Rights to the Camaro Supercar will be owned by the Championship itself, and manufacture will be handled by Triple Eight Race Engineering. If anything, it seems the Commodore might not be the last GM icon to live on as a race car; a ghost of a beloved, but bygone road car.

Corvettes always had the advantage, and now with mid-engine, even more so. It's called a sports car for a reason. The Camaro is not really a sports car even though the 6th gen is the closest to that definition yet.

When I bought my Camaro, there were rows of 1LS and 2LS's at the dealer. Usually, the automatics favored the manuals by 4 to 1. Still, there were plenty to choose from if you wanted a base model Camaro.

I don't know if a potential Camaro buyer would be cross shopping with a Porsche. At least, not with the high performance models like the 911.

Many of us who buy Camaros usually cross shop between the Challenger and Mustang. And those buyers did the same.
