To keep this simple as possible, it comes down the transmission. Since the trans operates based on load once you screw with the maf readings, load changes and charaistics of the transmission change. Shirt points, firmness, pressures, etc. Might be noticeable might not be. Tune can fix this worry.

I know this is an old post. But possibly GM does not recommend it for the L99 due to the DOD. Sometimes the L99 will be running 4 cylinders when cruising, maybe they believe it will be too much air intake for only 4 cylinders sometimes. Probably fine when the L99 is using all 8 cylinders. Just a theory.

Engine is only going to pull in what air it needs. It would be different if it were say, forced induction. But it isn't, so I'm hard pressed to think it would be a problem sucking air in 4-cylinder mode.
It may have something to do with air velocity in whatever sensor/computer algorithm or computations the computer does as the larger intake tube would effectively alter velocity due to the larger diameter which could make a difference in 4-cylinder mode. The development engineers know why for sure, but it may have been more out of an abundance of caution than it just wouldn't work. Regardless, when they first were available, I bought one, plus a spare filter for the shelf (Camaro parts start disappearing fast from GM), and put it on our 2010 L99 and it works just fine. Glad I got them then, I think I paid about 425 for both from GM at the time with my discount. Now they're almost $700 list price for the kit and over 160 for the replacement filter alone. TBH, the filter looks a lot like a K&N unit. But it does have that little "Z/28" molded on the cap. No codes, no shift problems, nothing. And the engine is stock as a rock, otherwise. No tune. Just did an oil cooler/heater/whatever delete on it this summer since the little heat exchanger decided to start dripping coolant and oil on the garage floor, but that was just recently and wouldn't have anything to do with the intake anyway.

Come on guys. It has to do with the maf sensor location and tube diameter. When you change that it throughs the fuel trims off.
