Ice box for lower intake temps
Getting my ice box built this week, hot temps are moving in so gotta keep my intake temps down since I'm running more boost this year. Its also much easier on the engine and will probably go ahead and change the t stat while I'm at it. Dustin is building me a 4 or 5 gallon tank that will hold about 20 to 25 lbs of ice. Gonna have to buy me a really big cooler to take ice to the track. I should be able to drop my intake temp about 25 to 30 degrees or about the ambient temp outside. It will be trunk mounted and should have it done next week to try it out at the Street Car Takeover in St louis June 1-2nd.

What should the intake temperature be around?

For me, I like them to stay less than ambient , but if I can't manage that then about 140F is the max I want to see at the end of the 1/4 mile to maintain good power.

Usually you don't run into issues until you see higher boost levels like mine which is around 14-16 lbs of boost. I really never saw higher temps at even 10 to 11 lbs of boost, just want to push this setup as hard as possible without any damage. Most boosted cars that run higher boost run an Ice Box, I still have one more pulley size to go down to and I need to see lower temps down track to do that. Most street cars running 7 to 10 lbs don't have issues. I'd still like to run a few more lbs with my 70mm pulley, maybe I'll get to do that this year. I remember how hot it was at the Camaro fest last year, I'm sure it will be close to that in Bowling Green this year so I'm just getting prepared.

In traffic I see 130-150 and that seems a bit high. Today in cooler weather, no traffic I was around 100-ish. But in the commute, forget about it.

190? I guess the more mods the higher intake temps will follow.

Laynlo...you are crazy!
Stock internals and stock exhaust + upgraded fuel + Maggie = 700rwhp and currently a 10.0 ET. (Soon to be 9.x’s) When you are done racing, swing by my house, driving on the highway with 25mpg...sick. Well done sir. Of course, pushing the stock internals this far is insane, but I just can’t quit watching.

Since I just drag race and don't really drive it on the street anymore this is the efficient way to go. I won't be removing any other pieces to the intercooler and may using some sort of valves to switch from strip to street. Yes we are using a Rule 2000 installed in the rear and it will be on a toggle to switch turn on the system when its time to do the burn out. I'll have to take about 50 lbs of ice to the track each time. Yes I still may go to a larger intercooler sometime in the future, but we will see how this motor holds up this year before any other decisions are made. If I can keep it cooler I can make the motor last longer for sure. I'll be changing the t stat also, the boost is just making it tougher to keep cool but we can do it.

Weapon X also has a kit to replace the front 3 HX's (intercooler, aux intercooler, and aux radiator) that I was looking at for down the road. Not sure if anyone has experience with that?
