ZL1 2018 Dangerous power steering issue and round course

Dear all

Last Saturday on the round course I experienced a very dangerous issue with the power steering on my 2018 ZL1.

While cornering hard, the front started making weird "grinding" noises. I was thinking that I had some pick up on the tires or maybe a wheel bearing is about to go.

Coming onto the main straight, my steering wheel locked up for a second and then started shaking violently. Also the car showed some (error) message about the power steering. I tried driving the car go get is back to the pits, but the shaking go so violent I could not drive any more than 20 miles per hour, which put the other participants of the event in danger.

So I decided to come to a complete stop offline and turned off the car. Interestingly enough, the shaking continued for approximately 1 minute while the car was turned completely off.

When the track workers started to try to tow me, the wheels were not exactly straight and something happened, which I think put the steering back to what is is supposed to be and it was all fine again. Needless to say that I did not run another session. This was extremely dangerous.

Has anyone experience anything similar?

cheers

It was just a message that popped up when it was happening. As I was on the racetrack I could not read the message, but it did say "power steering" in the message. Not sure if the car saved the message.

I remember reading another thread on here that the exact same thing happened.
I don't remember the out come from it. Hopefully they will respond to you.

To be honest, I cannot believe that in 2020 a steering issue of that magnitude and danger is happening. I hope no one else had to go through this, as it is extremely dangerous and can lead to potentially deadly consequences.

Do a search for steering issues on this forum. The first one that comes up is 'Power Steering Overheat" by waterman on 06/15/2020 that sounds very close to what happen to you. If you read some of the posts it looks like some people are putting in a part that vents the steering rack and it appears it came with 1LE, but not on the ZL1. It is worth a read.

Thank you so much GA SS, yes, waterman experienced exactly the same issue I experienced. I cannot believe this is temperature related, as it happened to me only after very few laps on the racetrack.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it, cooling ducts are ordered! However, I simply cannot understand that overheating would result in the issues that I experienced. If that steering lock up happens in the wrong place, it could be deadly. Surely they must have tested the part for what happens in case it overheats?

Geezus, glad you guys are ok and glad I didn’t read this yesterday. Did 1/2 a track day today in near monsoon conditions and this would’ve been on my mind also.
