►Q◄ Why does ZL1 sound more like GT350 than Z06?
I've been listening to the sound of this engine and it's pulsation cycle and it sounds a lot more like a "Flat plane crack" engine in GT350 than the Z06 sounds. Why?
Have they changed the firing sequence or did they put LT headers on it? Or is it the camera not catching all the sound frequencies produced by the engine? A Z06 revs and sounds differently than this car. |

I think it's more about the 10Sp transmission that causes that.

It sounds nothing like the Voodoo flat plane crank V8.

I kinda of see what your saying. I just said yesterday in the main thread that I wasn't a fan of the ZL1 exhaust note, it sounds too raspy. Not really like a GT350 though, just different then the multiple Z06's I've heard...may just be the video quality though.

The vehicles shown were all CTF/test vehicles so we don't know if all the cats / sound deadening materials and other stuff were actually added, I would assume it is but... Even if they are, camaro vs c7 design and materials, distance of parts. Like the engine will most likely be further away from cabin in the camaro vs the c7 LT1/4 to the cabin of the c7. LT1 one I can tell you on the camaro sits further out towards the front of the car vs the c7. Other things could easily change the note too. Exhaust diameters are 2.75'' on both the c7 and camaro. However, the ZL1 COULD have tri-y headers like the SS which the C7 does NOT. And that could easily make a difference. Yeah, I am not a huge fan of how the LT4 sounds. Still sounds damn great though! But I like the LT1 a bit better when it comes to the sound, too bad it doesn't have the extra 200hp! LOL. |

I think you guys have covered it all pretty well. I like that Z06 video though.
The ZL1, imo, compared to that video sounds a bit deeper. |

I wouldn't doubt that any sound difference C7Z vs Gen6 ZL, could be from the Camaro's use of "shorty" factory headers vs. cast manifolds. Remember, SS has them, and the Z/28 was the first application for them so I wouldn't doubt ZL1 gets them too. Even a stock SS vs. a Stingray, there is a bit of sound difference. Between the shortys and the completely different exhaust designs, that's probably where the sound differences are, even though they share engines.

I remember when I put LT headers on my Z06, the first thing I noticed was that "ticking" sound between each cylinder firing, which with manifold you don't hear it. I like the Z06 sound a bit better. :-) |
