Tire Repair

Quick question

Can I plug this and still track the car? Stock GY SC 3

I’ve got the tire and rim insurance and all that and will probably get 4 new, but I’ve got a track day the weekend after thanksgiving and was hoping to get one or two more track day’s out of these.

Pretty sure the answer is no lol

I would not do it. It just isn’t worth the risk of a tire failure. It may be alright to save and put on an extra rim for a spare.

It would be my luck that lateral force on the tire would pull the plug out and deflate the tire at the worst possible moment. So no, wouldn't do it.

I had a similar issue to OP - plugged with a mushroom plug (a patch that plugs) and never looked back. I also took that tire upwards of 150 MPH multiple times, just kept a close eye on tire pressure - no issues.

I had a similar issue also at the track and plugged it with the Safety Seal kit and had no issues for multiple sessions. I never lost any pressure.

FWIW, I picked up a roofing nail in my 3Rs a little over a year ago. I personally didn't feel confident about a plug. I had the tire dismounted and a patch applied inside and then remounted and balanced.

It's a little more pricey than a plug, but provided me with a great deal of peace of mind that remained for the life of the tire.

The patch never let go. Even after an epic "viking funeral" burnout before I replaced them.

I had a nail in a similar position on two tires. I plugged both. No problems whatsoever. But I will never buy run flats again. I had to look hard in order to find someone who repairs them. But the answer is yes, they are repairable.

I certainly believe it’s repairable for normal driving and wouldn’t hesitate to do so if that’s all I did.

Not sure about for track use.. I probably didn’t need to start the thread as personally I wouldn’t use a repaired tire on track. (I’ve gone 173mph at Daytona in that car on that tire) and wouldn’t trust it with a plug or repair for any track days.

It’s a piece of mind thing and chances are it would be fine but there’s a chance it won’t and that would be messy lol

I appreciate the input and comments though!

It may be ok on the track and others may have had no problems, but considering the extreme abuse tires see on the track I personally would not take the risk.

It might can be patched from the inside but you would have to go seek advice at a tire shop and they would probably want to sell you a new tire instead of patching yours.

I have plugged a lot of tires over the years. Never a problem. But to be safe I would not track the car with that tire. Street use should be fine.

That's exactly what happened to me. Brand new tire with a nail. The guy at the tire repair shop wanted to sell me a £390 tire. Went a couple of blocks down the road and had it repaired for £20! Tbh I was a bit worried, but they told me that they have patched many run flats and they never had an issue.
