Thanks. Fortunately I've quite a bit left in my MPSS, so I'll at least have time to see how the RS4 manages under the same conditions.

What is good about the RS4 (for me, anyway) is that it comes in 285/35-18.

I just had my Forgestar CF5Vs delivered today for autocross. 1600lb load rating. It really does seem to me to offer a great balance of cost, strength, and weight. I went with stock SS widths and 19" for a bit of weight reduction compared with stock. The biggest downside was the long lead time- I ordered the week of Thanksgiving for the Black Friday sale, and just received them today (15 weeks). I'm not sure how much was the vendor vs Forgestar itself. I had told the vendor that I didn't need them until the end of March, so that might have played into it as well. Getting some RE-71Rs mounted in the next week or two, unless someone can convince me that there is something new and great out there...

Why not Cup2's? I really think they're grippier than the 71's. In fact, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on a bunch of them in a squared 285/35R19 setup.

I really think they're better for different purposes. If you auto-x or time attack, I would go with RE71R's. If you plan on track days, I would go with the Cup 2's over the RE71'rs. If I did both I would go with the Cup 2's over the RE71R's. Just my opinions.

EDIT: As pointed out below, Cup 2's aren't eligible for a lot of classes in SCCA Solo competition now. Norm makes a great point.

If you're autocrossing with SCCA or any entity that more or less follows their rules, they aren't legal for Street, Street Touring, or CAM.

Well, that sure is good to know! RE's are cheating their tread wear I take it?

100%. I believe they were something like 180 and then as soon as SCCA rolled out their new requirements they changed to 220 even though nothing else changed

Somewhere around 21-22lbs according to my scale. Forgestar runs sales every now and then, and I got a great deal for Black Friday. It was $300 off per set (PM me if you want details).

As mentioned above, Cup2s aren't allowed for SCCA street class. And most manufacturers are "cheating" when it comes to 200TW class. The treadwear guidelines are set by the manufacturer, so it isn't really "cheating" per se. The new tires that came out this year or are being released are the Nexen SUR4g (developed specifically for autocross), BFG Rival S 1.5 (not available in 19" sizes), Dunlop Direzza ZIII (not released yet), Falken RT615K+ (no 19"), and the Hankook RS4. It will be interesting to see how the reviews pan out. A lot of the new tires set the RE-71R as the benchmark that they are trying to exceed, so I would anticipate the RE-71R shouldn't be tops for long.

The RE-71R has always been 200TW.

The original RS3 was rated at 140 treadwear, and then re-rated at 200 when the rules changed. Manufacturers are allowed to understate the grade, but not overstate it.

Is that what it was? I remembered that some tire did that.

ps. Thanks for your information here OminouSS. I went with 285 19"'s with Paul at PK Auto Design for my new ZL1. Apparently, you forged the way for us. Now he has measurements, etc... down.

Norm
I ran the Cup2's for a season. I liked them better for the track. They don't heat up as quick which is good on the track. I like the RE71's better for Autocross. They seemed to heat up quicker which is a definite plus for that venue.

The fact that RE71's are in stock class, and not in R for Race Rubber, is a huge advantage for Autocross and PAX. I also felt they were faster than the Cup2 by maybe a second on a short course.
