Illinois changes Law on tinted lens covers
On January 1, 2020, Illinois passed a law making it illegal to have tinted or smoked lens on lights which includes tail lights and headlight lens.
Bad news for some of you boys and girls. Another reason to get pulled over needlessly. Sorry, dont kill the messenger. |

When reviewing State motor vehicle laws you just might find many States have a general provision stating a person may not use a vehicle on a public way or sell or equip a vehicle for use on a public way with aftermarket equipment or altering factory lights.
When these vehicles are built they must meet all State requirements in order to be sold in those States. When we alter our lights you might just be opening yourself to a law suit in the event of a crash. I have seen State laws that never "directly" say we can not have tinted lights, however, if we look closely you will probably find a catch all clause that states you can not use a vehicle on a public way or sell or equip a vehicle for use on a public way with aftermarket equipment. Does not say a vendor can not sell the tinted lights, only that you can not operate your vehicle on a "public" way with them. Many vendors are now stating their product is for off road use or the fine print advises you to check your local laws regarding the use. I have also seen like products being sold in States the clearly prohibit the use of. Just saying.
