Can't add a turbo or supercharger

A local shop here said I can't add a turbo or supercharger with the cam I currently have. It's a small cam:

GPI SS1 Cam Motion kit - 219/231 .638/.629 on 112 LSA

Is there a reason why?

Thanks.

sounds like BS to me. I would go to another shop. I have the 525 asa crate engine and it has the asa cam. Im going to install supercharger on mine. even the the cam isn't a very good blower cam. I do know she will be faster then she is now.

People put blowers on stock cam all the time. Smaller than yours.

I run a TSP VVT 3.2 with a ProCharger D1X making 760 rwhp on E85.

You'll be fine with that cam.

That's not really a small cam. The lift is higher than a btr stage 3 blower cam, less durationi think but still. A long time ago i was taught as long as you have about 10 degrees more duration on the exhaust side it will work pretty well on boost.... i'm on a stock cam with my whipple. I might stay away from that shop

The reason why they are telling you that is because of your LSA. Smaller LSA is usually bad for boost set ups because it loses efficiency. You'll be fine running it but you'll see more power from a cam with larger LSA

I don't know that he would see more power, just a broader more linear curve. I'm no pro, just what I understood is the narrow LSA is for more power at peak but a narrower power band usually for NA. Superchargers don't need that but I don't think it would hurt, just not necessary.

Even my SS4 can work well with a centri. NA cams tend to do well with centri blowers, their power curves are very similar, but for a PD blower or turbo, you'll need a dedicated blower cam/ custom grind cam for a turbo setup with that wider LSA. A shop should have told you this.

That cam only has 1 degree overlap. It would be better suited for a positive displacement/roots style blower. It wouldn't be ideal for a turbo car but would work great for a Whipple/Maggie or LSA style set up. I'm sure it would be alright on a centri but it will cost power on a turbo car for sure. Depending on what your ultimate power goal is it should work fine. If you need a supercharger hit us up. Can't help you with the install out in Hawaii though.

Thanks guys for all your input! I also emailed GPI where I bought my cam and they said, "John, we would likely make the same call here in the shop. Our SS1 is designed for Naturally Aspirated use - you could benefit much more with either a turbo specific camshaft or supercharger designed camshaft, both of which we offer!"

Turbo Cams: https://gwatneyperformance.com/produ...urbo-camshaft/

Blower Cams: https://gwatneyperformance.com/produ...ower-camshaft/

But from what I got from you guys, a supercharger would be ok with my setup.

You would be fine with a PD supercharger for sure. Just because it isn't the best camshaft doesn't mean it won't work and still give you a large power gain.
