Well with the Georgia Super Speeder law I guess that was the fine required by it. One thing that could help you is if you are a first time offender. Have you gotten any previous tickets for speeding? If you have I think it will be harder to get them to cut you some slack on the charges.

Good point! It was a wake up call cause I realize that if he didn't pull me over that time I would have done it again. I couldn't live with myself if I ever killed anyone!

Ahhh those famous words that can only be correctly spoken by a Sheriff in deep south Georgia, "You're in my county now, boy". LOL. A $500 radar/laser detector doesn't seem so expensive when any ticket is GA. will cost you $200 and more than likely about $380. Mine goes off 2-3 times a day.

If you get into the go peddle, it's pretty easy to get into triple digit speeds. Around my parts anything over 50 km/hr over the speed limit is considered 'Racing' and comes with obscene fines, and they can potentially crush your car. As a result, I have the Camaro set to warn me when I hit 135. Gives me lots of time to get back out of the throttle...
Sucks that this happened to you. I'd fight it. Don't know how it works where you are, but around here, they give you the chance to talk to the prosecutor, who will generally try and get you to plea to a lesser ticket to keep you out of the court system. Easier and cheaper for everyone.

Just think of it this way, those cops probably saved you from a serious crash. At those speeds things happen so fast and all it could take is an animal to run across the road or another car pull out, and that leaves you with no reaction time at that kind of speed. It just ain't worth it.

That very thing happened to me 25 years ago. Some guy was tailgating me, so I held it down to leave him in my dust...all of a sudden, my radar detector went off FULL STRENGTH, headlights came on from a car backed into a parking lot off to my right...98 in a 35 mph zone. I found myself facing a serious reckless driving charge.
Your demenor during the traffic stop is very important - the officer may have made a notation on his copy of the citation. Hopefully you didn't show an attitude or anger towards the officer, sounds like you pretty much confessed and admitted you were speeding. I suggest you get dressed up nice and go in and speak with the county attorney to find out "what his position is on the charges." It's a long shot, but sometimes interjecting a human element with a sincere apology might get the charges REDUCED. If that meeting doesn't go in your favor, then yes, hire a lawyer and hope for the best. It's going to be expensive, but it is what it is. If you tend to speed a lot, the hardest lesson to learn is only SPEED SMART. Make sure you can see everything along your intended "flight path" (no hills or bridges for officers to hide behind), have a quality radar detector and react fast when it goes off. Good luck and tell us how it works out for you. |
