Reason why Camaro is staggered?

Did they ever say why they went with a staggered wheel set up?

On the SS models, I thought it was to reduce understeer, which is better for "normal" people lol.

EDIT...ahh so close lol. Thanks to VR Baron below for the correction.

All else same with suspension, stagger increases understeer, which mfgs like so people won’t tail first into a wall as understeer easier for Joe average to control on the street.

As above, plus:
1. Because it’s a performance car, and you have to be able to get the power down.
2. So they can sell you more tires, since you really can’t rotate them to extend tread life.

Bigger rear tires and a handling balance to push. Guess they are still paranoid since the corvair debacle.

Why did the 6th gen SS 1LE get wider tires at the rear only?

Was it a downstream consequence of the bump in power and torque? Understeer budget or breakaway characteristics reasons and the Alpha chassis? Appearance? Other?

The practical benefits of the square setup were offset by the better performance characteristics of the staggered setup.

Keep in mind that the 6th gen suspension geometry and chassis are different from the 5th gen, so what worked well on one may not work well on the other.

Except that they limit steering precision and control of the car at speed…
